From the Year 2 Classroom

What a wonderful and busy start to the term we've had! The children have settled in beautifully and are already working hard in the classroom. With the warmer weather, they’ve really enjoyed having lunch outside on Tuesdays and spending time playing with their friends on the outdoor equipment. We’re excited about the learning ahead—exploring new ideas and building on what we’ve already learned. It’s shaping up to be a great term!
In Literacy, we’re continuing to practice the reading strategy of monitoring. This means learning to stop and think while reading—checking for understanding, revising when something doesn’t make sense, and using clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. At home, it’s helpful to encourage your child to jot down any tricky words they come across and have a go at guessing what they might mean using context clues.
We’re also more than halfway through our poetry unit! The children have been exploring different types of poems and letting their imaginations shine. They’ve written one-word, two-word, three-word, and free verse poems, even using similes to add flair. We’re discovering some truly talented poets in our learning spaces!
In Maths, we’re continuing our work on fractions. We’re now exploring fractions of time (like half and quarter
hours) and also looking at capacity and mass using halves and quarters. Soon, we’ll be moving into our next topic: Data—where we’ll learn how to collect and display information.
Our Religion unit, Our Call to Mission, focuses on kindness and caring for others. We’ve introduced a kindness jar in our classroom, and the students are working hard to fill it with acts of kindness. We’re already more than 1/8 of the way there!
In Inquiry, we’re diving into the States of Matter. Over the next three weeks, the children will be conducting fun experiments with different teachers to explore solids, liquids, and gases.
Reminders
• A big thank you to families who are consistently sending in Home Readers. Let’s finish the term strong—please try to return them each Friday.
• With the warmer weather and high UV levels, hats are required every day this term. Sunscreen is also encouraged—we have some available in the classroom for students to reapply.
• Water bottles are essential! Please make sure your child brings one each day to stay hydrated.
Thank you for your continued support. We’re looking forward to a wonderful rest of the term!
Warm Regards,
Year Two Team
