From the Year 1 Classroom

Term 4 is well and truly up and running. We are at the pointy end of the year with so much going on. Please remember that the children MUST be wearing a school hat when outside. This can be a time where the children show more fatigue with the warmer weather, daylight savings and other extra activities going on. Please be mindful of this and be kind to yourselves.

Literacy

Next week, we will begin an Author Study focusing on the much-loved children's author Julia Donaldson. Through her imaginative and engaging stories, students will explore key comprehension strategies such as predicting, visualising, and making connections. They’ll also be working through the writing process—planning, drafting, editing, and publishing—to create their own pieces inspired by Donaldson’s storytelling style. It’s a fantastic opportunity to build literacy skills while celebrating creativity and a love of reading!

We will also continue to revise the sounds we have learned and revisit the Tricky Words to help develop automaticity in our reading and writing.

Maths

Over the next two weeks, the students will work through activities looking at the topic of time and the concepts of weeks, months and years. They will build on previous knowledge of ordering familiar events based on duration, learning the days and months in order and understanding the number of days in a year and each month. They will also explore the broader concepts of decades and centuries. We will also look at telling the time to the hour. These are concepts you can definitely practise at home to support this learning. The children may even come home with singing songs about these concepts that they have learnt at school.

Religion – Called to Mission

For Religion, students are to bring a precious possession to class next week on Tuesday, the 28th of October. We will be looking at how lucky we are to have what we have. Some of the items cost money, and some don’t. When we think about the poor people in our community who don’t have as much as we have, even simple things like food to eat every day. We will discuss important things poor people may not have and how we could assist them through action.

Inquiry – Same but Different: Family Life

As we continue through this unit, we will explore what family life was like in the past, looking at daily routines, roles and activities. The students will reflect on how families lived, worked and interacted in previous generations.
