Winter Co-curricular Awards

From Mrs Catherine Litchfield, Director of Co-curricular Learning

Winter Co-curricular Assembly

What a wonderful winter of cocurricular activities we have experienced! I would like to congratulate everyone on a successful season.

At the beginning of the year I asked our students to consider involvement in something new, perhaps by volunteering to get involved with Round Square activities, signing up for Duke of Edinburgh or auditioning for the musical. I am thrilled to say a lot of students took on that challenge, and for that I am really grateful.

We have 230 students currently participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program, and we presented a record number of 12 Gold awards on Friday at the Year 12 Graduation.

We had over 120 students audition for the musical and whilst many missed out on the experience because we could only have 60 in the production, all who tried out can be proud of auditioning, and please try again next year.

I loved hearing the speeches at the Musical presentation night, the cadet dinner, the netball and rugby dinners and the hockey presentation. There is enormous gratitude for the coaches, parents and team members. It is wonderful to be able to acknowledge everybody’s contributions to the successes that happen in our students' busy lives.

On Wednesday 24 September, we presented the Colours and Honours awards for those who have excelled in their areas. Co-curricular Blues were also announced, and presented later at House meetings.

I loved watching all our students play sport, perform, debate, and much more over this last season. And most of all I loved watching our students watching and supporting each other! We are so lucky to be part of a rich co-ed environment where we can support our brothers, sisters and friends in their own pursuits.

There is a real opportunity to forge friendships with those outside of normal friendship group. Peers’ interests may not always align with individual passions, but that is what is so fabulous about our school. There is a variety of options on offer and there are vast learnings that come when we see others achieve in their chosen fields, be it in the classroom, on the sporting field, on the stage or in a debating competition.

Please don’t take this for granted! This place is humming with opportunities for students to learn and build skills in sports, the performing arts, or to work as a team to overcome challenges that are outside of their comfort zones – whether that manifests itself at a cadet promotions camp, a Duke of Edinburgh hike, or suffering a disappointing loss on the sporting field.

These challenges and disappointments serve students well (even though they are not much fun at the time) enabling them to build resilience. Let’s learn from the losses and disappointments, and let’s humbly celebrate the wins as we continue into our summer season.

Finally, to the Class of 2025: Thank you for your contributions to our co-curricular program over your years here at Kinross Wolaroi. I trust you have valued your involvement and will take the fond memories from these activities with you into the next stage of your lives.

I know you will have been working with your mentors and teachers to develop your study timetable for the next few weeks. You are awake for 14 -15 hours a day. I trust your timetable has 6-8 hours of study per day to enable you to do your best in the HSC exams – that still leaves 6 hours for meals, hobbies and ‘chill time’.  Please prioritise 1-2 hours a day of physical exercise – be it walking, jogging, swimming, tennis or touch with mates, to ensure you have an effective study break and keep your body and mind fit. Physical exercise outside will contribute to your health and wellbeing during this stressful time.

I wish you good luck and hope you continue to be involved in sports, music and drama groups, debating or cattle teams – it is a great way to meet people at uni and it makes for a very healthy social life in the towns and cities where you will live.

Finally, as Dr Parry said last week to our new leaders, how are you going to continue to contribute to our School and our wider community?
