Defence Force Day

In the lead up to Remembrance Day, Wagga Wagga Christian College acknowledged the important work of the Defence Force by conducting Defence Force Day. Students in Years 5-8 were put through their paces in a range of physical and mental challenges. The rotation of activities included cracking codes, tackling obstacle courses, and playing human Battleship.

Our Defence School Mentor, Mr Gellert, organised the event, leading a team of student cadets and teachers. It was an incredible day with students demonstrating great teamwork and enthusiasm.

Support for the Defence Force is an integral part of our College. For over ten years, a Defence School Mentor has been part of our staff team.

Compassion Australia Launch

On Tuesday, we launched our partnership with Compassion Australia. This international organisation, established more than 70 years ago, seeks to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name, by empowering Christian communities to offer assistance through advocacy and sponsorship.

Our College will initially partner with the local churches in Indonesia.

Stephanie, from Compassion Australia visited our College to speak to both staff and students about the partnership, and the importance of modelling compassion to young people both in word and deed.

She spoke about how Jesus commanded us to: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and to “Love your neighbour as yourself.” [ref. Mark 12:31 and Luke 10:29-37]. She encouraged staff and students in our responsibilities to care for others and help them grow in hope and healing.

Our Primary and Secondary School cohorts, enthusiastically embraced the partnership, engaging in interactive games, videos and Bible verses, and later writing personal notes that will be distributed to our partner Indonesian churches.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Remembrance Day

Our College commemorated Remembrance Day with services for Primary and Secondary School students. Our Primary School students gathered for a minute’s silence in acknowledgement of those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

Mr Gellert, Defence School Mentor, led the Remembrance Day Service for Secondary School.  He explained why Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year and the importance of continuing to commemorate not only the end of World War I but the many other conflicts and operations in which Australians have served in.

In a symbol of respect, gratitude and remembrance, three of our student cadets laid wreaths at the foot of the flagpole, where the Australian flag flew at half-mast.

Dr Jackson, our College Principal, spoke of the importance of the service and the hope we have in Jesus Christ, before leading the students and staff in prayer.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

John 15:12-13 (NIV)

Outdoor Education Camps

As part of the Outdoor Education program, students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award embarked on two exciting adventurous journeys, designed to build resilience, leadership, and a deeper connection with nature.

During Term 3, students ventured to the alpine town of Bright for a high-energy introduction to outdoor adventure. The camp encouraged students to push beyond their comfort zones while developing outdoor skills and friendships. The practice camp included:

White Water Rafting: Students learned to navigate fast-moving water, with teamwork and courage, through tackling the rapids of Ovens River.

Mountain Biking: Scenic and rugged trails tested their endurance and technical biking skills.

Hiking and Camping: A trek to Apex Lookout offered stunning views, followed by fishing, cooking spaghetti bolognese, and sharing stories around the campfire before settling into tents.

During Term 4, students embarked on a second camp to Livingstone National Park, New South Wales. This student-led expedition served as the formal Adventurous Journey Assessment for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award:

Student Planning: Students took full responsibility for route mapping, gear checks, and logistics.

21 km Hike: Over two days, students hiked through diverse terrain with full packs, demonstrating independence and teamwork.

Self-Sufficiency: Students prepared their own meals, set up camp, and made trail decisions under staff supervision.

This journey was a powerful experience in leadership, problem-solving, and personal growth.

A massive thank you to the staff that assisted in the preparation and especially to Mrs Harris and Mr Gyles for attending both camps.
