One of our year 10 students, Ava, has just completed the ADF Work Experience Program in Darwin - here is her story.

Last week I travelled to Darwin to do a work experience program, at the naval base called Larrakeyah. This was a 3-day program, and 12 students were accepted aged between 15 to 17. I wasn’t sure what to expect but knew I would love every second of it. I was right. Every day we started at 7:30am, and the first day was nerve racking, I was full of so much excitement and hope. I knew very little of what we were going to do in the program and had no clue who was attending. I’ll tell you one thing; I came home every afternoon not being able to stop smiling and yapped my mums ears off about my day. It was the best experience I have had and has only made me more determined that this is what I want to do, join the navy.

We got to see the engineering side of things, sit in a meeting and hear all the logistics side of things to keep a base like Larrakeyah running. We got to talk to SO many people, hearing about their journey and their life in the Navy. We met people who had been in the Navy for 30+ years, saying “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” We learnt about the training side of things, how you form a tight knit family because that’s all you have out there. And over only 3 days, I could feel that connection with the other kids doing the program alongside me. I found my people.

On the second day we got an unexpected patrol boat tour, and they say these boats are small compared to the ships. Wow. These boats were amazing, to see a little bit of what it’s like at sea for them was incredible.

The last day we got to do a navy standard swim test, good thing it was already 35 degrees. We did things such as tread water for 15 minutes, do a safety exit from a ‘ship’, and swim a certain length underwater, all tests that are in their basic training.

Overall, this experience was amazing, and far from the traditional work experience. I went in thinking I knew what I wanted to do, and it has changed completely. If you ever get the opportunity to do a program like this and you’re interested in joining the ADF, I highly recommend, you meet some amazing people and have an experience like no other.
