DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
🌱 LITERACY - Reading
Grade 5 students are nearing the end of their mentor text, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Students continue to develop their ability to use textual evidence to respond to comprehension questions and show their understanding of the text through a range of comprehension activities.
With Easter celebrations approaching, Grade 6 students will investigate and learn about events and festivals celebrated around the world.
What you can do at home
Ask your child to share what they have read in the mentor texts during the week. Encourage them to read texts of their own interests daily and discuss what they’re reading and why.
Writing
Grade 5 students are focusing on the enjoyment of writing and have been working on creating comics. This supports their storytelling skills, visual thinking, and their ability to engage with the audience.
Students in the Grade 5 and 6 classes will be writing letters to a peer, sharing words of encouragement and highlighting the positive contributions their classmate has made this term. They will also be reflecting upon themselves and their actions throughout the term, identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement. This learning opportunity encourages students to look within and learn about self-relflecting, a great skills for student wellbeing.
Spelling and Language Conventions
In Spelling, students in Grade 5 continue to work on their independent word lists, based on their results on the SWST. This will continue each week, with new words and a variety of activities to choose from.
Grade 6 students will continue using Nessy to practice sounds and spelling patterns that were identified as areas of focus in their pre-assessment.
🌱 NUMERACY
Grade 5 and 6 students are exploring and learning about the order of operations; BIDMAS
B: Brackets
I: Indices
D: Division
M: Multiplication
A: Addition
S: Subtraction
Students will apply their learning by solving equations where there are multiple operations.
What you can do at home
Along with the weekly 'Mathletics' tasks assigned for homeowrk, students are encouraged to go to the 'My Numeracy' section of Essential Assessment to reinforce the skills and areas taught at school.
🌱 CBL
Students will continue working on the laws they wish to propose for the Year 5/6 community. They will finalize their marketing propaganda and write speeches to present to the mock parliament. Parliament will debate the proposals before making a final decision.
Essential Question:
How and why do people connect to achieve laws in society?
Guiding Questions:
- What does it mean to be a citizen?
- What is democracy in Australia and why is voting in a democracy important?
- What are the roles and responsibilities of the different levels of government and how do they connect?
- How are laws developed and enforced?
🌱 HOMEWORK
