What's Happening in Preps?

It’s been an exciting start to the year for our prep students! They’ve been busy learning, settling into classrooms and school routines, and making lots of new friends!
English
The students have been reading the text Milo’s Birthday Surprise to help introduce each letter of the alphabet and its corresponding sound. They’re almost at the end of the book, which means we’ve almost been introduced to all the letters!
In their writing lessons, they’ve been working hard on their pencil grip to help them form their letters. The students have been having a go writing their names and other familiar words, as well as completing tracing activities to help them with their fine motor skills.
Mathematics
Students have been practicing counting from 1 to 10. They’ve been playing games and using a wide range of resources such as numeral cards, dice, tens frames and counters to help them identify and model different numbers. Every morning we use tens frames to count how many days we’ve been at school, and we’ll have a big celebration when we get to 100!
They have been learning all about the days of the week and using their own schedules to discuss what happens and connect each day with familiar events. Every morning, we identify what day it is, what day it was yesterday, and what day it will be tomorrow. We’ve also been exploring the difference between weekends and weekdays, and different times of the day such as morning, afternoon, and night.
School Wide Positive Behaviours
The students have been using Mackellar’s School Wide Positive Behaviours chart to learn all about the school’s four key values: Learning, Respect, Resilience, and Teamwork. We’ve discussed what each of these values looks like, completed activities and games to help us with our understanding, and then practiced these behaviours in different settings. The teachers have been busy giving out Buzz Awards to the students who they see displaying these values – so many students have already had a chance to spin the Buzz Award wheel and win a prize!
