Berwick Chase PS Joins School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

We are thrilled to announce that Berwick Chase Primary School has been accepted into the Department of Education’s School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program!

This initiative is designed to equip students with the behavioural skills and resources they need to become successful, responsible community members.

This work will build on the tremendous progress we have already made in fostering a positive school environment. Our ongoing commitment to student well-being and behavioural development has laid a strong foundation, and SWPBS will allow us to refine and enhance our approach even further.

Schools worldwide have seen remarkable improvements through the SWPBS framework. Research has shown that schools implementing SWPBS experience:

  • Up to 60% reduction in behavioural incidents,
  • Increased student engagement and academic success,
  • Enhanced school climate and overall student well-being.

With the challenges young people face today—including family financial stress, the pervasive influence of social media, and exposure to extreme and intolerant beliefs—it is more important than ever to provide them with structured guidance. SWPBS allows us to take a proactive, evidence-based approach to shaping a positive and inclusive school culture.

The 7 Key Elements of SWPBS

The program is founded on seven essential components:

  1. Common Philosophy and Purpose – Ensuring a shared vision for positive behaviour across the school community.

  2. Leadership – Engaging school leaders to drive meaningful change.

  3. Clarifying Expected Behaviour – Establishing clear and consistent expectations for all students.

  4. Teaching Expected Behaviour – Explicitly teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours.

  5. Acknowledging Expected Behaviour – Recognising and rewarding students who demonstrate positive actions.

  6. Discouraging Inappropriate Behaviour – Using constructive strategies to address and correct behaviour issues.

  7. Ongoing Monitoring – Regularly assessing and refining our approach based on data and student needs.

A critical message our team is currently focusing on is: “Behaviour is learned; therefore, responsible behaviour can be taught.”

Through professional learning, our staff will continue to deepen their understanding of effective behaviour support strategies and apply them consistently across the school.

We look forward to sharing our progress and keeping you updated on how SWPBS is making a difference at Berwick Chase. Together, we can build upon our strong foundation and create a school environment where every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Warm regards,
