Student Voice

Student Voice :                         Heights Campus

Welcome to Week 10 - the last week of Term 1 ALREADY!!! It has been a very busy term, but also super exciting with many events to make us all smile.

In the SLC and MLC area on the Heights Campus, there is going to be a Book Recommendation Wall. You will be able to see it once you go out to the middle area. The SLC and MLC students will write a book recommendation for the wall, which will encourage other students to want to read that book and hopefully broaden the type of books students read at home and at school. We encourage everyone to borrow a book to read at home from the library, but of course please return it so someone else can get as much joy from the book as you did!

Our school fully supports and is a positive advocate for Student Voice and Agency. This is when students get a choice if they want to run anything or have any ideas on what they can change and make more people happy around the school. Last year, the MLC used their voice to persuade Mrs Cottier to let us keep the rabbits!

This year, so far, we have had two students who have taken the opportunity to speak up and organise a club. One is called “Run Club” which Thomas set up. Then Anh set up the book recommendations area! We also have opportunities for students to write what books they would like to see in the Library, and what activities they would want to see set up outside to provide different play areas/things to play with at recess and lunch.

We hope to fill the blue board by the end of this year with lots more Student suggestions!

Elly is in Grade 3 and Vic is in Grade 1/2B. They both applied to be part of a colouring competition, organised by Eden Foster who is an electorate in the Victorian Parliament. We are all very proud of them for winning.  For their prize they received a goodie bag with treats inside!

Here’s a quote from Elly: “I like the little bunny when I coloured the fur!”

Congratulations to everyone else who entered the competition, but weren’t successful this time! We hope you had fun colouring as well!

Last week, the MLC students from both campuses went to see the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens. They learnt how First Nations peoples hunted for food and discovered new Bunurong words through the Acknowledgement of Country. They investigated different types of Indigenous plants and learnt how these plants can produce food for us to eat such as finger-limes, lemon myrtle and more. They also got to see how possum skins can be made into a ball or clothes, and how Aboriginal people stitched possum skins together as their children grew older. Here are some of the children's quotes:

“I like how we learnt how to use ochre.” Termora

“I liked learning about the paint and we learnt about the ochre” Willam

“I like how we saw animals!” Suntra

“I loved the amazing views!” Meiqin

Some SLC students and some lucky Grade 4s went to the Athletics Carnival last Friday. A lot of our students came home with ribbons and some didn't, but we are still proud of them no matter what. An ES staff member, Mr Lane, also invited Aiden Hinson to our school to talk about triple jump and to share his experiences as a professional athlete and how it feels to be a professional triple jumper. Aiden has represented Australia at many different competitions. It was very inspiring to hear him speak and it helped us achieve and be successful at this year's Athletics event!

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays and we hope you can enjoy some fun things to with family and friends. Remember to be safe when online and get outside and enjoy the fresh air as well!
