Catholic Identity

What are the students learning in Religious Education?

Our students engage in Religious Education lessons across the week. These lessons are designed to engage with the lives of our students, the Scriptures, teachings and Traditions of the Catholic Church in a way that enables all students to learn from the wisdom of the Christian Faith.

Foundation students are learning about Our Church as a place of worship and a community.

Junior One students are learning about the Sacrament of Baptism and belonging to a Christian community.

Junior Two students are learning about Creation as a gift of love from God and how we are called to care for it.

Middle Three students are learning about the Sacraments of Initiation, with a particular focus on the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

Middle Four students are learning about prayer as a way of engaging in a relationship with God and the types of prayers in the Catholic Tradition.

Senior Five students are learning about the Holy Spirit and Pentecost, reflecting on how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives.

Senior Six students are learning about how we as disciples of Jesus are called to the service of others and to uphold social justice through the lens of the Beatitudes.

Weekly Gospel - Mark 6:30-34

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Reflection

Rest and relaxation are important parts of a life lived in Christ. Each week we are called to rest on 'the Lord's Day' Sunday by the Church, this tradition is taken from the Jewish customs of the Sabbath Day. On Sundays we are encouraged to refrain from unnecessary work, to rest, and to be 'fed' by our shepherd, Jesus.

This week's reading prompts us to consider how we observe this tradition in our lives. There are many ways we can be 'fed' by the Lord on a Sunday; it might be making time for some quiet contemplation or prayer, making time for a meal together as a family, or spending some downtime with our children. Another way is by attending a Sunday Mass and letting ourselves be fed by the word of God, the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and the fellowship of our Catholic community.

This coming weekend, let's see if we can carve out a moment of rest, for ourselves and our family, and engage in some activity that feeds the Spirit within us.
