Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

We are aware of several cases of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) throughout our community at present.

Whooping Cough is highly contagious and can appear as coughing in long spells, and often ends with a high-pitched 'whoop' sound when the breathes is inhaled.

If your child has whooping cough, they will be infectious just before the start of the cough until three weeks after the cough started.

If your child is given antibiotics, they can still spread the infection until they have had five days of antibiotics.

Victorian Department of Health advises children with whooping cough should not attend child care, kindergarten or school:

  • for three weeks from the start of the cough, if no antibiotics are given
  • until they have had at least five days of their course of antibiotics.

Consult with your medical professional if you have any concerns.     The fact sheet below provides further information and support for you.

Please keep the school office advised of any positive diagnosis and student absences, to help us provide care for our school community.
