School Council – Community Member Position

From Tom D, Senior Assistant Principal

Expressions of Interest

North Melbourne Primary School has an opening on their School Council for a Community Member. Community members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experience.

To build the partnership with UHS, the North Melbourne Primary School Council would like to extend an Expression of Interest to a parent (or adult family member) of a recent past NMPS student who is now at UHS to become a Community Member of the council. Community member terms are negotiable (up to two years, commencing from the Council meeting following co-option).

School councils play a key role in Victorian government schools, and being a member of the school council is a rewarding and challenging experience. Acting as a team, the council supports the principal to enhance the educational opportunities for students.

School councils make decisions that set the direction of the school. They:

help create and check the school's budget

contribute to the school strategic plan

make decisions on policies like investments, payments by parents, dress code.

Councils usually have between 6 and 15 members and include:

the principal, who is the executive officer

parents who are chosen through an election

school or department staff members

a student, if the school has year 7 students and above

optional community members who are chosen by the council (these members have special knowledge or experience in the local community).

To express interest in this NMPS School Council - Community Member position, please email north.melbourne.ps@education.vic.gov.au before 26th August 2024.
