Focaccia

Focaccia week is always a favourite with students.  Focaccia is a type of Italian bread, that can be topped with a variety of things such as herbs, olives, or baby tomatoes.

Our students first had to decipher what 'luke warm' water is, to be able to activate some yeast. Once frothy this activated water, yeast and sugar mixture was added to measured flour and salt, to then be kneaded and set to rise.

Basic skills such as understanding kitchen measurements i.e. cups, spoons, kg, grams, and mL along with a variety of new kitchen utensils and cooking terms, supports fundamental life skill's students are developing in their kitchen classes.

Once risen the dough was tipped onto lined baking trays, then drizzled olive oil and fresh herbs from the garden.  Fingers created little divots in the dough then the focaccia was placed in the oven to bake.

Not a single slice remained from any of the classes. We also had a creative 'teacup focaccia' created in 3E.
