Olympics

The history of the Olympic Games can be disjointed. There is evidence to suggest that the ancient Greeks began the concept by measuring time in Olympiads. Every four years the activites indicated a strong relationship to culture and sport, where they honoured the most famous Greek God, Zeus.

After the Roman Empire conquered Greece, the Olympics were banned. It would take another 1,500 years before the games would rise again.

The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. It is estimated that there were 60,000 spectators. There were 12 nations competiting, with about 280 male only participants.

Fast forward to 2024 and Australia has already had their most successful Olympics and we still have a few days remaining.

The Australian Olympic Committee encouraged all schools across Australia to dress in Green and Gold on Friday 2 August!

St Mary's were keen to participate and supported Australia with great pride.

It is hard to know which of the activities were the favourites: torch making, flag banners, potato Olympics, medal craft, Lego Challenges, track and field world record attempts .....or the House relay at the end of the day!  What was your favourite activity?

The results from the House Relays were:

  • 1st: Alpha (Blue) House
  • 2nd: Beta (Green) House
  • 3rd: Gamma (Yellow) House
  • 4th: Delta (Red) House
