Principal's Report
Flexible. Resilient. Positive. 2024
We have had a fabulous few weeks of teaching and learning at Rangeview, and the improved weather has seen many members of our community looking up and enjoying the sunshine. There have been lots of activities, events and excursions for our students including; Level 1 and 2 Sea Life Excursion to Melbourne Aquarium, Foundation 100 Days of School, AFL Clinics, Level 2 Hoop Time, Level 5 and 6 Smoothie Bar Incursion, Parents and Friends Junior and Senior Disco, a whole school Olympic Assembly, Phonics Professional Learning for our staff, Division T Ball, Division Netball, the arrival of the Rangeview Book Fair, and the State Principal's Conference.
It has been so lovely to see so many of the students so engaged in the Olympics at this time. We thank the Specialist Team for organising and running the Olympics Assembly for our whole school on Monday 5th and special thanks to Deidre Geilings for sourcing a real Olympic Torch from the 2000 Sydney Games for our students to see.
On Monday 29th July Kate McLeod and I attended the State Principal's Conference at the Convention Centre in the city. This event saw hundreds of Principal teams from across Victoria come together for a day of education innovation and Department initiative guidance.
We heard from Dr Marcia Devlin - Academy CEO, the Hon Ben Carroll - Minister for Education, Dr David Howes - Deputy Secretary Schools and Regional Services, and Keynote Dr Kirstin Ferguson AM - on Leading with Impact: Mastering the Art of Modern Leadership.
We then attended a seminar on Embedding Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support with Pascoe Vale Girls School, a seminar on Leading Improvement as a Team with Dave Faulkner, and a final session on Using Evidence on Implementation and on Practice with Dr Jenny Donovan.
Schools across the state are moving into the new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 and the state's vision for Learning and Wellbeing.
The current school Values at Rangeview are Respect, Resilience, Teamwork and Learning. These are wonderful values and have been in place at the school for many years. We discuss them with students at all levels of the school, and there is a focus on different values at different times of the school year.
We are taking some time this year, to re-visit these school values and reflect on their strengths moving forward. It is important that the values of a school not only represent the values of the community, but also represent the current perspectives of the student body. We have spent some time as a staff considering our school values and discussing what changes - if any - we might make. We have also worked with our students in every grade, to understand the value and importance of school values, and to feedback ideas around which values we hold true and which new values we might consider. School Council has also joined this discussion and provided their feedback.
Please see below for data from the school staff, the school council, and the student body.
We are now seeking community feedback to add to this discussion. If you would like to participate, please do so using the Google Form https://forms.gle/fgeDuWB9saaB2N269
We are delighted to announce that one of our students - Reyansh Sinha from Level 5 - has won second prize in the 2024 Parliament Prize Competition.
The Parliament Prize is an annual competition delivered by the parliament’s Community Engagement Unit. Students are invited to consider what they would say in Parliament if they were an MP and submit a 90-second video of their own Member’s Statement. This year we received a record breaking 1126 entries from over 200 schools across the state.
For more information and to watch the speeches please access here The Parliament Prize
We are so proud of Reyansh and congratulate him on having the courage to participate in this Public Speaking competition. He has won $250 for the school which we will put towards the Rangeview Public Speaking Competition to support and encourage other students in this area.
On Thursday of last week Rangeview celebrated Principal's Day. Principals’ Day is an initiative by the Victorian Principals Association. Celebrated in schools across the country, Principals’ Day is about recognising the efforts of principals and assistant principals in achieving excellence in education.
Liam, Kate and I were very spoilt on the day with a special morning tea cake, a wonderful video message from the students and a huge pile of cards from grades across the school. We all feel very lucky and grateful to be able to lead and work in such a wonderful school community, and it was very heart-warming to receive thanks from so many.
On Tuesday 27th August at 7pm we will be holding the Community School Council Meeting here in the school library. This meeting is open for any members of the school community to attend to observe the workings of our school council.
We encourage any interested members of the community to come along.
A huge thank you to our wonderful Parents & Friends Committee for arranging a hugely successful Kids Disco on Friday night. Literally hundreds of students danced the night away in both the Junior and Senior Disco with glow sticks galore. Thanks also to our wonderful volunteer parents who helped with supervision on the night.
Well done to all of our families that observed the traffic management plan and only drove one way down Churinga Ave for a safe and speedy drop off. The parking issues were almost non-existent, which was a huge improvement on previous years.
Our annual Book Fair began in the Library this week with hundreds of books arriving for families to consider for home libraries. The students will all have a chance to view the collection and discuss their wish list with families.
Books will be available to purchase at lunchtimes (B1) and after school.
