Important Notices

We want to hear from you!

A reminder that, ahead of our upcoming school review, there are two key ways we’re inviting our parent and carer community to be involved in this process and we’d love for every family to take part.

The more feedback and ideas we gather, the better informed our plans will be.

Parent/Carer Community Forum – TONIGHT (Wednesday 13 August at 6:00pm)

We’re hosting a relaxed and welcoming Community Forum next Wednesday evening in the school staffroom. It’s a chance for parents and carers to share their thoughts about our school, the things we’re doing well, and the areas we should focus on in the years ahead.

🗓 Date: Wednesday 13 August

 🕕Time: 6:00pm

📍 Location: SKiPPS Staffroom

☕ Light refreshments provided

Whether you’ve been part of the SKiPPS community for one year or ten, your perspective matters. We hope you’ll come along and help us shape what comes next.

Parent/Carer Survey – Share your thoughts in your own time

If you’re unable to attend the forum, we’d still love to hear from you! We’ve created a short online survey that captures your thoughts on what SKiPPS does well, what you value, and where you believe we should grow.

It only takes a few minutes and your responses will be incredibly helpful as we finalise our future priorities.

Ride2School Day – A Big Win for Fun, Fitness & Our Planet

Last Friday, SKiPPS came alive with bikes, scooters, and plenty of smiling faces as we celebrated Ride2School Day in true SKiPPS style. Despite the winter chill, students embraced active travel, arriving on two (or sometimes three!) wheels, ready to take part in the day’s activities.

Throughout the day, each year level enjoyed a fun bike circuit, where students navigated twists, turns, and challenges with their classmates. After all that riding, students were treated to delicious fruit and veggie platters thanks to the Active Travel Team at the City of Port Phillip. Some lucky riders also got to jump on the smoothie bike – powering their own blenders to make a fresh, healthy drink.

Why Active Travel Matters

Active travel – whether it’s riding, walking, scooting, or skating – isn’t just fun, it’s also a win for our health and the environment. Fewer cars on the road means:

  • Reduced noise pollution
  • Lower energy use
  • Less carbon emissions

In fact, every kilometre travelled actively instead of by car saves 243.8 grams of CO₂. On National Ride2School Day last year, Aussie students saved 29 tonnes of CO₂ – the same as planting 202 trees – in just one day! Imagine the difference if we made this choice every day.

Thank You

A huge thank you to Allison Shanahan for her incredible organisation of the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly and that every student had the chance to get involved.

We also thank SKiPPA and the City of Port Phillip Active Travel Team for their generous support.

Let’s keep the momentum going and make active travel a regular part of our school week – rain, shine, or winter chill!

Canterbury Road Pedestrian Crossing

We’d like to remind all families to take extra care when travelling to and from school, particularly those families living in St Kilda West who use the pedestrian crossing on Canterbury Road.

Back in 2022, our School Council successfully lobbied for safety upgrades on the crossing leading to the underpass at the rear of the school. Whilst this was successful in securing an extension of the crossing time (green man), dynamic pedestrian detectors and the addition of visibility aids including decals, signage and zig zag line marking, it has not completely removed the risk. Too many cars travel along the road (which has a speed limit of 60 km/h) during morning rush hour and simply don't notice the crossing.

Just last week, it has been reported to us there were a couple of concerning incidents where cars failed to stop at the red light, resulting in some very close calls involving our community.

While we continue to work with local authorities to improve safety, we are urging all parents and carers to speak with their children about staying alert and cautious when crossing roads - even at pedestrian crossings. Encourage them to stop, look, listen and think before stepping out, and never assume a vehicle will stop.

Together, let’s do everything we can to keep our students safe.

Help Us Advocate for a Better Bus Service for Our Community

At SKiPPS, we know how important reliable public transport is — not only for our families and students, but for the broader community we are part of.

That’s why we’re supporting a local push to improve Bus Route 606, a vital link that connects Elsternwick to Port Melbourne, travelling through key areas including St Kilda, Elwood, and Middle Park (and stopping at the front of our school).

Unfortunately, the current service is falling short — particularly for school children and older residents who rely on it the most. Overcrowding, infrequent services, and buses that don’t arrive on time — or at all — have left many commuters stranded, including students travelling to and from school.

Many SKiPPS students rely on this route after they graduate, using the 606 to get to Albert Park College or Elwood College. For these students, a reliable and frequent bus service isn't a luxury — it’s a necessity.

Local community advocate Jenni has started a petition calling for improved service frequency to ensure safer, more reliable travel for all. We encourage SKiPPS families and community members to show their support by signing the petition here:

Let’s work together to ensure that our current and former students — along with all members of our community — can rely on public transport that is safe, consistent, and meets the needs of the people it serves.
