Life Beyond MITS

MITS Alumni Transition Manager, Annie Carruthers supports Year 12’s in their post-schooling journey. Annie talks with students and their families about their career or work pathways, and ensures they have the appropriate life documents to help them on their way.

There are some important things to have ready when young people leave MITS, and Annie will help the Year 12 students get each of them before they finish Year 12.  Here are some of the things:

Darwin Visit: Preparing for Life Beyond School

At the end of Term 2, Nickiesha and Lesharnie spent a few days in Darwin with MITS Alumni Transition Manager Annie Carruthers, exploring opportunities and getting ready for life after school.

Together, they visited:

🏫 Batchelor Institute — We were all impressed by the incredible facilities, especially for students interested in the Cert IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Care Practice. Batchelor offers certificate courses in study blocks and flies students to and from Community, making it a flexible and accessible option.

🏠 IYMP Housing — This fully supported accommodation includes a live-in mentor and guidance for independent living. Young people receive help with cooking, budgeting, getting their Learner Licence, and even enjoy weekend bush trips.

✈️ Airport Development Group Indigenous Training Academy — A great space showcasing pathways into hotel and airport operations, .

During the trip, Nickiesha and Lesharnie also made big strides in getting their life documents sorted:

✅ Ochre Card ✅ Larrakia Card ✅ Birth Certificate ✅ Registered with MVP — ready to sit their L’s!

This trip was all about building confidence, exploring options, and making sure our young people are set up for success. Big thanks to everyone – Pilar Cubillo, Kylie Rautoka and Sam Watkins, who welcomed us and shared their knowledge.
