CEO's Update

We often refer to Term 3 at MITS as “the Premiership Term”.  A footballing concept, this describes the critical third quarter, in which energy, determination and hard work will propel a team to be positioned to seize their premiership opportunity as they approach the end of the game.  Our MITS Premiership Term in 2025 is characteristically busy, determined and future-focussed!

It was a joy to be part of our MITS Celebration of the Arts on Friday 15 August.  This celebration, now in its second year, provided a platform for students across all boarding houses to express themselves through fashion and catwalk, music, speech and visual art.  The artistic expressions of students were outstanding, and demonstrate the depth of talent and artistic thought amongst our student cohort.  I want to thank the many staff who worked with students to create such a special evening.

The following day, our MITS Board came together for an offsite day of professional learning and planning, at Tromgin (the Royal Botanic Gardens).  We started the day learning from Indigenous Educator Jakobi, before sessions focussed on child safety, directors’ duties and strategic development, as we plan for the articulation and launch of our next MITS Strategy, which will launch in 2027.

At the same time, we are excitedly meeting prospective MITS students in interviews for our Year 7 Class of 2026.  We received nearly 100 applications for our 22 Year 7 positions, and will interview just over 60 people and their families.  Last week, I was part of a team who were warmly welcomed to Warruwi, Gunbalanya, Nganmarriyanga and Bulla Camp in the NT, where we met some remarkable young people and their families.  Our interviews continue into early September, and we will be contacting students and families to make offers for 2026 in early Term 4.

And this week, we toured the newly established construction site at the Richmond Football Club, where work has begun on the creation of the William Cooper Centre.  Once complete, this exceptional new space will provide purpose-built classrooms for MITS, back at our “home ground” of Punt Road Oval.

All of this is a snapshot of just one week: “a few minutes” in our Premiership Term.  Alongside all these activities, the everyday energy of MITS continues, in the school, the boarding houses, and at pathways schools.  As we head into footy finals in Melbourne, our students can feel proud of their effort and determination in this MITS “Premiership Term”.
