Grade 3 Report

Grade 3 children recently enjoyed an exciting hands-on Science Incursion exploring the fascinating processes of weathering and erosion. Through a series of interactive investigations, students discovered how rocks and landforms change over time due to both mechanical and chemical weathering.

To investigate mechanical weathering, students placed pieces of chalk and sand into containers and observed how the chalk changed shape as it was shaken. As the chalk rubbed against the sand, its sharp edges gradually became rounded, demonstrating how rocks can be broken down through physical forces. Students also explored chemical weathering by adding vinegar to chalk and observing the resulting reaction. This experiment helped them understand how certain chemicals can slowly dissolve and alter rocks over time.

Students then investigated erosion by using water to wear away sugar cubes, modelling the way rainfall and flowing water can gradually erode rock surfaces. They also explored how rocks are formed by creating layered "rocks" from different coloured clay. By flattening, stacking and pressing the layers together, students modelled the formation of sedimentary rocks and then applied heat and pressure with their hands to demonstrate how rocks can change over time.

One of the highlights of the day was becoming palaeontologists! Students carefully unearthed fossils from sand using tools and compared their discoveries with identification charts. They also had the opportunity to examine a variety of rock samples using magnifying glasses, observing the unique features and textures.

The incursion provided a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with science through a range of hands-on experiments and investigations. The excitement, curiosity and enthusiasm displayed throughout the day showed just how much the students enjoyed learning through discovery!
