A student asked me a few weeks to come along and watch her play a game of football. Having worked with this young person for a few years, I decided I'd brave the cold and get down to a local footy ground for an early morning game. When I arrived, it was an overwhelming reminder of what sport means to so many people.

Amongst those watching were 3 other members of staff at the College. In addition to those on the field, another handful of students, both past and present students were chasing the footy around and even more on the sidelines in supporting roles.

I walked to the canteen set up for a breakfast of champions (read: steak, cheese and bacon pie) and again was met with an ex-student wielding the tongs, and as I consumed my breakfast on the sidelines next to a family of a current student, I was met by yet more spectators; past, present and (potentially!) a future student of Heathmont College. It is no shock at how the local football league is a hive for students and connections to many schools, including ours. But it was an awesome reminder of the passions and skills of many of our young people.

I often engage in conversations with many students about their weekend adventures in the sporting fields. Whether it is somersaulting through the air at a Cheer competition, riding at break-neck speeds down treacherous mountain bike runs or pitching shut out games at the local baseball diamonds, I always get excited about how awesome our kids are. Recently, some of our younger students played against each other in a football game. Whilst the result was not exactly the nail-biting ending like game 1 of the State of Origin on Wednesday night, the excitement of lining up against a mate on a frosty Saturday morning made me jealous of my youth.

That being said, two of the staff members watching with me on Saturday were 'donning' the boots ready to play in the following games that day. Maybe it's time for me to come out of retirement.. (editors note: this comment is purely satirical. In no way will I fit my old football attire)

If you've got results from sporting endeavours that you think are worth a shoutout- don't forget to let me know; The Gazette team would love to hear of your triumphs!
