VCE Legal Students storm the Supreme Court!
An early morning start couldn't dampen the buzz on Thursday, May 21st, as VCE Legal Studies students headed to Melbourne's Supreme Court—instantly greeted by the media cameras awaiting the arrival of the day’s accused from remand.
Our guides, Martin and Justine, kicked things off with a captivating history tour of the buildings (yes, including real dungeons!). The day quickly escalated into an incredible masterclass when we sat down with Court of Appeal Justice Maree Kennedy and her associates. Students fired off questions about career pathways, systemic justice, and the heavy weight of delivering life-altering, impartial judgments.
The absolute highlight? Stepping into the courtroom of Justice Tinney. After a welcome and briefing from the judge himself, students witnessed the high-stakes jury empanelment for a gripping murder and arson trial. Watching the strategic challenges from the prosecution and defence as they locked in the final jury (7 men, 6 women, including one spare) was fascinating. The group was so hooked they wanted to stay on to hear the opening addresses!
This wasn't just a textbook excursion—it was a front-row seat to the pinnacle of our justice system. The students are already hooked, eagerly tracking the case online and are keen to get back to the courtroom!
