Welcome Darragh and Zoe
A big official welcome to Darragh and Zoe who have joined the campus over the past few weeks. Both have settled in beautifully well to Scotsburn life and are loving their time so far!
NAPLAN
As you will be aware, NAPLAN testing will take place this week and next for our Year 3 and 5 students. The Year 3 writing test will continue to be paper-based, however all other Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN tests will be online.
The testing schedule is set out below, and will run from 9.30am - 11am each morning:
Wednesday 13th | Thursday 14th | Monday 18th | Tuesday 19th |
Writing | Reading | Conventions of Language | Numeracy |
We ask parents and carers to please be mindful of avoiding planned holidays or appointments for your Year 3 and 5 students throughout this timeframe. Of course, we understand that absence due to illness is unavoidable. Please speak to Mr Morgan if you have any queries regarding this.
If your child will be using their own device, please ensure that it is fully charged each morning. Students will also require the use of headphones. We will have some at school that the students can be provided with, however if they would like to bring their own, they are more than welcome to.
In terms of other arrangements to allow the testing to run smoothly, our specialist timetable will be altered on Wednesday with SC1 going to specialists in the morning. Our Grade 4s and 6s will complete some alternate activities each morning.
Should we require a catch up session for any absent students, this will occur on Wednesday 20th March.
Buninyong Primary School Cross Country Day
This Friday (15th April), is our whole school cross country day. We will be spending the morning at the Buninyong campus, with us meeting from 8.45am at Buninyong in our usual spot in the courtyard. The cross-country events will conclude at lunchtime.
When students are not running, they will be cheering on other students or working out of a classroom at the Buninyong Campus. We will be returning to Scotsburn after lunch, in time for our Scotsburn Assembly at 3pm.
The schedule for the day is below – feel free to come along and cheer on your child! We will make sure all students know the correct race to run in well before their event.
Please remember pick up arrangements will be back at Scotsburn at 3.30pm, after our assembly.
SC1 Preps - 9.15am
SC1 Grade 1s and 2s - 9:45am
SC2 Grade 3s and 4s - 10.15am
SC2 Grade 5s and 6s - 11:45am
Scotsburn Assembly this Friday
We will have our next Scotsburn assembly this Friday (15th March), at 3pm in the shed. This will take place after our cross country morning at Buninyong. We would love lots of parents to come along, so that we can share some wonderful celebrations, awards and important upcoming information. See you there!
Sun Smart
Although this week looks like we will be receiving a bit of relief from the hot weather, it is still important that our students are sun smart each and every day. Our students do an amazing job with their hats when outside, and we are in great routine with using sunscreen each and every day. If your child has any irritation to school-provided sunscreen, can we please ask that you send some along with your child for the remainder of the term. Thanks in advance.
Grade 6 Grand Prix Excursion
Our Grade 6 students are lucky enough this term to be attending the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne, on Friday 22nd March. Students will attend the event via bus, and will have the opportunity to view a range of different motor cars racing, including the formula one cars. The day will provide students with the opportunity to learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in exciting ways.
Some of the themes covered on the day and in the lead up include aerodynamics, design, drag, power, thrust and lift. This day will also engage the students in studying different techniques of marketing used by Formula One teams, which will be greatly beneficial for their key learning themes of money and economics, studied later in the year.
Parents of Grade 6 students, please check compass events for permission and payment, as the event, as both are due by this Friday.
3-6 Interschool Athletics Day
What a great day everyone had at the Interschool athletics last week. We were so proud of all our Scotsburn students, with everyone demonstrating resilience and their personal best. We even had 2 girls in the championship race, which is an amazing effort. Well done everyone!!
Term 1 Reading Night Award
With more and more of our ‘Scotsburn Super Star Readers’ either reaching or getting close to reaching 25 nights of reading, we have decided on our award. All students that reach 25 nights of reading for Term 1 will be invited to make a pizza for lunch on the last day of term - Thursday 28th March. Thank you parents for encouraging your child to read at home and supporting their reading development.
Parent Information Session
Buninyong Primary School is holding an information session for any interested parents or carers regarding early literacy. This information is particularly aimed at Prep-Year 2 parents, but parents of all year levels are welcome to attend. Please see above for details.
The session will take place following the junior heats of the school cross-country event this Friday, hopefully making it convenient for many parents to attend. We do however understand that this time may not suit everyone and we will therefore offer a repeat of the session early in Term 2.
SC1 Learning Snapshot
Last week we welcomed the Buninyong Preps and their teachers to our wonderful Scotsburn campus for our Teddy Bears’ Picnic. We enjoyed some bear-themed stories, songs, and yoga before splitting into groups and rotating through different activities. Students completed a teddy drawing, went on a teddy bear hunt, had fun with the parachute and played with the story baskets.
It was great seeing students making new friends and playing nicely during the breaks. We all enjoyed a picnic together under the shade before saying our goodbyes.
Student Teddy Bears’ Picnic Reflections:
I loved being a group leader because I got to tell the preps some fun stories and help them walk in a line - Scout
I liked that we got to hunt for bears - Hugo
My favourite part was being part of the yellow group - Maverick
I loved doing the drawings - Gracie
I liked putting my teddy on the parachute and throwing it in the air - Elijah
In Spelling this week we have continued exploring the ‘long a’ sound during Spelling. Students are starting to use correct spelling for this sound in their writing, which is wonderful.
During Reading, we explored the book Wombat Stew and unpacked some of the vocabulary - words such as ambled, boasted and waltzing. Students came up with some great sentences of their own using these words.
In Writing, we have started to learn about procedural writing. We have written instructions for the school morning routine, getting ready for school and even how to make Wombat Stew! Some very interesting recipes!
During Maths, we have continued to work on our Place Value understanding. We have worked on number bonds and how numbers are made up of parts. Two-digit numbers are made up of 10s and 1s.
Have a lovely week.

SC2 Learning Snapshot
SC2 has continued to roll on with lots happening both in and out of the classroom. Last Tuesday saw us head to Llanberris for the Interhouse Athletics. It was so impressive to see each and every student in SC2 give their personal best and encourage each other. An awesome day was had by all.
In the classroom, we are beginning to apply some of the knowledge we have learnt across the term to some project-based tasks. This week we will be working on finishing our draft of our hybrid animal narrative in Writing, beginning a city design project in Maths, and beginning our hybrid animal presentation and diorama as part of our Inquiry Unit. This type of application of our learning is an exciting time for students in SC2, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate new skills and knowledge as well as have some agency in their learning.
Our Grade 3s and 5s will also begin their week of NAPLAN assessments. These students are well prepared for this, and ready to approach each assessment with enthusiasm and a growth mindset.
A wonderful job everyone with our home reading. It looks like we will have most, if not all of our class joining in the pizza lunch on the last day of term for 25 nights of reading. Keep up the amazing work everyone!
Have another incredible week,
Jarrod and Liz
Scotsburn Intercampus Travel
At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day. We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher. |
