Well Being Hub #2

Supporting students during times of assessment stress

As we head towards the end of term one, we start to see a spike in students' stress levels as they have assessments due and exams to sit.

Exam and Assessment stress may look like:

Physical symptoms

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Complaints of nausea
  • Complaints of headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Fidgeting
  • Teeth grinding
  • Nail biting

Mentally & Emotionally

  • Feeling confused
  • Being irritable
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Low motivation
  • Withdrawal from friends, family and pleasurable activities

What students can do to help

  • Plan out your study sessions and break them into smaller manageable tasks
  • Be kind to yourself and maintain perspective
  • Give yourself mini rewards for achieving study goals
  • Short study session with breaks allows you to remember more
  • Explain things out loud to your friends. This will help you make sense of and remember complex information
  • Ask for help from a teacher or parent if you need to
  • Move your body, get enough sleep, eat well!

What the school can do to help

  • Use positive and encouraging language to help relieve the pressure students are feeling
  • Listen to and validate their emotions
  • Run through some relaxation practices; mindfulness and deep breathing exercises
  • Maintain open and supportive communication
  • Promote time management
  • Teach techniques to handle disappointment and learn form mistakes
  • Notice when students are not coping well and less than expected notify the HOY or GO’s

What parents/carers can do to help

  • Help students be consistent about routines around sleep
  • Encourage good nutrition
  • Encourage exercise (maybe even exercise as a family)
  • Spend time together as a family doing enjoyable activities to de-stress
  • Encourage good time management with plenty of breaks
  • Create space for validation of frustrations and problem-solving
  • Reach out to their Head of Year or year Level Guidance Officer if you have any concerns, you can do this via the online referral form on the school website Online Referral Form
