Embracing the Power of Daily Review in English

Dear Parents and Carer,

As we move forward in our academic year, it's imperative to reflect on the foundational principles of education, particularly in the realm of English language learning. At St. Francis Xavier, we are committed to ensuring that every student not only learns but also internalises the beauty and complexity of the English language. One fundamental aspect that we emphasise is the importance of daily review.

With the new NSW K-6 English Syllabus, we have a clear plan that highlights the importance of learning every day and practicing regularly. Daily review serves as a cornerstone in this endeavour, fostering a deeper understanding and retention of linguistic concepts and skills.

Here are several compelling reasons why daily review in English is crucial:

1. Consolidation of Knowledge: Just as a builder reinforces the foundation of a structure, daily review solidifies the linguistic foundation laid in class. It allows students to revisit previously learned material, reinforcing their understanding and retention over time.

2. Skill Mastery: Mastery is not achieved through sporadic bursts of study but through consistent practice and refinement. Daily review provides students with the opportunity to hone their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills regularly, paving the way for proficiency and fluency.

3. Retention and Recall: The human brain is wired to forget information over time unless it is consistently revisited. By engaging in daily review, students strengthen their memory retention and recall abilities, ensuring that knowledge remains accessible when needed.

4. Building Confidence: Success breeds confidence. When students witness their progress through daily review, they gain confidence in their abilities and become more willing to take on new challenges in English language learning.

Incorporating daily review into your child's routine doesn't have to be daunting. It can take the form of brief vocabulary exercises, reading for pleasure, journaling, or engaging in discussions about daily experiences. Encouraging your child to integrate English learning into their daily lives fosters a lifelong appreciation for language and literacy.

Please find attached some simple tasks to be completed at home as part of your spelling review.

We are dedicated to supporting your child's educational journey. We encourage you to partner with us in emphasising the importance of daily review in English language learning. Together, we can empower our students to unlock the full potential of their linguistic abilities and thrive in an ever-evolving world.

Warm regards,
