How to Access eBooks from Heathmont College Library:

1. Visit the eBook platform directly at https://heathmont.eplatform.co/ or access it via the Library homepage by clicking the STAR on Compass.

Then, click on the ‘Can I borrow eBooks' widget and proceed to sign in.

2. To access eBooks from your device, follow these steps:

a. Use your @schools email address as the username.

b. Use your student ID (ABC0000) as the password.

3. You can also download the app on your mobile device using the same login details. To install the app, click on the QR code below.

Recreational Reading

Dr. Bronwyn Reddan, a Research Fellow at Deakin University, shared insights on Australian teen reading habits during Australia Reads' VOLUME symposium last year.

In her Lightning Talk, Dr. Reddan discussed strategies to encourage teen reading, focusing on three key questions:

How often do Australian teens read for pleasure?

Research shows that most teens fall into the categories of occasional readers or non-readers.
Time constraints, among other factors, often hinder reading habits.

What stops teens from reading?

Teens cited time constraints, identity, attention, motivation, and lack of access to reading materials as barriers.

What keeps teens reading?

Dr. Reddan suggests fostering a positive mindset towards reading, promoting leadership roles that model reading behaviour, and encouraging collaboration among educators, librarians, and parents.
Creating a supportive reading culture and making reading a social activity can help sustain teen interest in reading.

We the staff at the LRC agree with Dr’ Reddan’s belief that with consistent effort from various stakeholders, it's possible to cultivate a reading-friendly environment for teens.

We actively promote the borrowing of physical books and eBooks, and we also promote library and literacy related events in our space.

Recreational Reading - 7 Ways to Support Teens' Recreational Reading

World Poetry Day

World Poetry Day happens every year on March 21st. It was started by a group called UNESCO in 1999. They wanted to celebrate poetry from all over the world and help keep different languages alive.

The idea is to share poems and appreciate the beauty of language. UNESCO hopes that by celebrating poetry, people will be encouraged to read, write, and teach it. This way, we can keep languages and cultures thriving.

So, on World Poetry Day, people everywhere join in to enjoy poetry and show some love to poets around the globe!

Dead Poets Society

Through our year 10 curriculum, students recently watched the engaging film, "Dead Poet's Society." Over the weeks, they immersed themselves in the intricacies of the films narratives and themes —analysing characters, dissecting key scenes, and teasing out the themes that drove the story. Their mission was to put together a solid essay response, due by the end of term, that showcased their understanding and insights.

We look forward to hearing what the students thought of the film, completing their Common Assessment Task (CAT) and learning a little more about the world of Poetry.

Anzac Day

The team at the LRC collaborated with Mr. Brown in the Woodworking area and Mr. Webster and Mr. Patterson from our Facilities team to prepare for the upcoming ANZAC Day display. Below are some images showcasing the works in progress, utilising the laser cutter, jig maker and electrical saw.
