Literacy

In Literacy we have been reading the novel ‘The Last Bear’, a story of a young girl, April, who moved to a remote island in the Arctic Circle, with her father and befriended a wild polar bear. Whilst reading the text as a whole class, we have been analysing different parts of the story, unpacking themes and messages, discussing how relationships change and evolve, learning about the impacts of climate change, as well expanding our vocabulary with interesting words and phrases from the text. We have loved April’s story and thoroughly enjoyed reading the text.

In Writing, we have been unpacking how to write informative paragraphs. We have been writing topic sentences and matching them to concluding sentences that mirror the main idea. This week, our focus has been on connecting supporting details to topic sentences. Moving forward, we will be using these skills to write informative paragraphs in the coming weeks.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been extending our knowledge of shape transformations including rotations, translations and reflections. We have learnt about a Cartesian Plane, the different quadrants and how to locate points correctly. There has also been a focus on converting units of measurement, for example, kilometres to metres and kilograms to grams. We have been deepening our knowledge of operations, looking at strategies to find the missing number in a number sequence and how to solve problems using vertical addition and subtraction.

SEL

During our Social and Emotional sessions we have been learning about mindfulness and how we can practise mindfulness correctly. We have learnt that there are many different ways we can practise mindfulness such as medication, colouring and breathe work. We have also learnt about empathy and what it means to be empathetic. We learnt different ways we can show empathy and why it's important. We know that emotions can vary between people and some people may react differently to certain situations. We participated in class surveys where we asked our peers what emotion they would feel if a certain situation occurred to them. We then turned this data into a graph. This helped us to visually see how our emotions can vary.

AUSLAN

In AUSLAN we have learnt everyday signs such as, yes, no, stop and go. We have also learnt the signs for different family members, farm animals and signs to use around school.
