Year 5 Newsletter

Literacy

In Literacy, the Year 5 students have been learning about the Novel ‘The Wild Robot’. We have recently finished reading the story and all of the children have expressed their excitement about the book and can’t wait to read the sequel when it arrives at the school library. The students analysed different parts of the story by discussing cause and effect, author’s purpose, characterisation as well expanding their vocabulary with interesting words and phrases from the text. 

Numeracy 

In Numeracy, the Year 5 students have been extending their knowledge of operations. The learning focused around teaching students how to balance equations, strategies they could use to find the missing number in a number sequence, and how to solve problems using vertical addition and subtraction. The students have also been learning about time by converting units of time from 12 to 24 hours and calculating elapsed time.

 

SEL

In SEL, the Year 5 students have begun learning about The Resilience Project. We have started to learn about one of their 3 key pillars ‘Gratitude’. The students have learnt what gratitude is and how we can show gratitude to those around us. The students are really excited to learn more about gratitude and how it can improve our overall well being.

 

 

Auslan

In Auslan, the Year 5 students have been learning how to sign colours, everyday greetings and how to sign words relating to family. The cohort are really excited to demonstrate their ability to ‘sign’ and communicate with one another without the use of their voices. 

NAPLAN 

The Year 5 students recently participated in the NAPLAN Assessments. It was a busy few days with the students completing assessments on Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy across the 3 days. All of the students tried their very best and demonstrated their resilience by tackling any challenges that were thrown at them. We’re very proud of the Year 5 students who participated in the NAPLAN assessments.
