Year 1 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to another fantastic month of learning! Here is some of our learning that’s taken place.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have started stage 4+ of Little Learners Love Literacy phonemes and graphemes. We introduced new Chitter Chatter cards including ‘what a mess- /s/’, ‘up the hill- /l/’ and ‘huff and puff’ /f/. We have worked a lot with vowels (V) and consonants (V) and understand the combinations we see in words such as CVC, CVCC or CCVC. The students have completed tasks including Let’s Spell, Let’s Write and Read and Draw, to develop their understanding of how sounds correspond to different letters and letter combinations.

In Writing we have started to expand sentences using adjectives. We turn boring sentences into interesting sentences with much more detail!

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have started to learn about place value, 2D shapes and how to use calendars. We have been working on number sequences, duration and location. We have practised continuing a number sequence, by finding the rule and identifying what number comes next. For example, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31.

SEL

In our classroom, we've been discovering wonderful things with The Resilience Project! We have been learning all about gratitude and empathy. Gratitude means saying thank you for the good things in our lives, like friends, family, and even sunny days! And empathy? That is all about understanding how others feel and being kind to them. We are learning that even when things are tough, we can be strong and bounce back, just like superheroes. So let's keep smiling and being grateful for all the amazing things around us!

Knowledge

In Knowledge, we packed our bags and explored different parts of the world, learning about continents and how we can use maps to help find different places. We began in Australia and learnt about First Nations People and the traditional names for Country. Did you know that Gilgai Plains Primary School is located on Wurundjeri Country? Next, we jet headed off to Asia, North America and then to Europe. We have loved learning about famous landmarks and destinations such as Uluru, The Colosseum and Mount Everest.
