Stage 1 News

The Stage 1 Possums and Magpies have been super lucky when it comes to experimenting and playing with technology. Over the last couple of weeks, Stage 1 has been visiting the library on a Friday morning to experiment with Bee-Bots.

In the form of a bee, the Bee-Bots have several buttons on its back. The students’ simply press one of them to turn it on. Then, it’s very simple for the children to program it by pressing the directions one after the other (right, left, straight).

The Bee-Bot obeys the instructions, follows the program ordered by the students and can retain up to 40 commands.

Stage 1 absolutely love coding their robots to do different things.  Each week we learn how we can extend our technology and coding skills, and how we can apply it to our learning.  Mrs Dunham always puts on a show for us!

Maths Stage 1

We have also been having loads of fun in Maths.  We have been going outside using sticks, leaves, rocks, or anything that allows us to count and make different number combinations.  In the pictures below, students were sent into the Nature Area to find 3 logs and 12 frogs.  From this, students had to make combinations to 12 using 3 numbers. To do this, we used sticks as our logs and rocks or leaves as our frogs.  Some students were able to go beyond this and they were also working on multiplication and division.

Harmony Day

On Thursday of Week 8 Stage 1 classes had the chance to participate in Harmony day activities at school.  The students discussed how diversity is the one thing we all have in common and it’s good to celebrate everyone being different.  Here is a photo of Stage 1 in their orange clothes for Harmony day.

English

In Stage One, our students are diving into the world of perspective and argumentation through animal characters with human-like traits.  We recently enjoyed reading "Koala Ark" by Stephen Martin King, where Koala braves the smoke in a tiny, battered boat to rescue friends from the billabong.

Furthermore, our students have been actively engaging with a variety of informative texts, discovering how information can bolster arguments in persuasive writing.  This week we will be honing our skills in crafting compelling arguments, supported by evidence from these informative texts.

As part of our language development activities, students were tasked with constructing compound sentences with descriptive adjectives, enhancing their ability to vividly convey their thoughts and ideas.
