Educational Achievement

Reading
At our school, we know that reading is more than just sounding out words. It’s also about understanding, thinking, and making meaning from the texts. Strong reading comprehension helps children become confident learners across all subjects and builds a lifelong love of reading.
One simple way you can support your child’s comprehension at home is by asking questions about the book they are reading. This encourages them to think deeper, make connections, and explain their ideas.
Here are five questions you might try:
- What has happened in the story so far?
- What do you think might happen next? Why?
- How is the main character feeling? How do you know?
- What was your favourite part and why?
- Does this story remind you of anything in your own life or another book you’ve read?
By taking just a few minutes to talk about a book, you’re helping your child develop critical thinking skills and a stronger understanding of what they read. Remember, it's super important to include reading into your child's every day routine!
Parent Teacher Interviews- Semester 2
At our school, we have four opportunities to formally communicate with families about your child's learning. These are:
- Report cards at the end of Term 2 and Term 4
- Parent teacher interviews at the end of Term 1 and Term 3
Parent teacher interviews are a valuable opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school. These meetings give you the chance to celebrate your child’s achievements, hear about their progress, and discuss ways we can work together to support their learning.
Even if everything is going smoothly, attending the interview helps build a clear picture of your child as a learner and ensures that any small challenges are noticed early. It also shows your child that school and home are connected, and that their learning is important to everyone.
To book in an interview with your child's teacher on Monday September 1st or Tuesday September 2nd, or a specialist teacher, click on the link and follow the instructions.

Classroom Music
Last week at the Eisteddfod was one that GJV and GSV can be very proud of. Both choirs performed brilliantly and came home with quite a few first places and a trophy for the Most Promising Junior Choral Performance and another trophy for the Champion Primary School Choir. Thank you once again to Mrs Sam Brown, Mrs Lutton, Mrs Bernard and Mrs Lloyd for their help on the day.
In classroom music, we will see a focus on different levels of composition (making up our own music) across all the year levels this semester. We will compose using Boomwhackers, recorders and technology!
