CLASSROOM NEWS!

 P/1 Fun this fortnight

Another busy and exciting two weeks in our room, as we celebrated 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL!!! It is amazing that we have managed to reach this very special milestone already! My, how the year is zooming by.

We had a wonderful day learning about many different ways we use and see the number 100.

Our Preppies came dressed in the most fantastic outfits; from bright, bold colours, to 100 year old versions of themselves. We ate party food, made crowns and created a poster in Maths to represent 10 groups of 10 objects to build to 100.

This week in writing, we have been busy building upon our understanding of nouns, verbs and adjectives to write some amazing sentences. While in Maths we have had a lot of fun learning how to subtract by making Play-Doh spheres and squishing them. This has helped us understand that when we subtract we start with a number, take some away and are then left with a new number. Who knew Maths could be so much fun!!

Lots of news from the 3s and 2s!

The 2/3 room has been buzzing with lots of great learning this past fortnight! We have VERY much enjoyed having Miss Kerr back with us as she enters her final few weeks of her pre-service teaching.

In Literacy, we continue to work on the tricky comprehension skill, inferring, using clues from the text and our prior knowledge to "read between the lines". We are beginning to look at poetry, investigating Jackie French's Cyclone to unpack the rich language that experienced authors use when writing. We are looking forward to experimenting with the same concepts in our writing.

In Maths, we have enjoyed creating pirate treasure maps and describing a safe pathway using cardinal directions. This week our focus has shifted to measurement and using subtraction strategies to compare our height to others. We have been estimating and comparing using the "jump the difference" strategy and finding out, is there anyone exactly 7cm taller or shorter than we are?

4/5/6 With Miss Childs

Last week the students were given a reading and writing mini project to complete whilst I was away. They read a range of picture books and the responded to them in a variety of ways, e.g., making a wordsearch of the key words, creating a quiz using Kahoot, turning the story into a comic, comparing two books using a Venn diagram, creating a character profile poster, etc. They all engaged really well in the task and produced some wonderful work:

We are back into Poetry this week. We have learnt how to write a Haiku and a Tanka. These are both types of Japanese poetry that focus on how many syllables are in each line. They are often written about nature or celebrations. Here are some examples:

In Maths, we are revising subtraction. We have straightened out a few common errors when using vertical subtraction. We have also learnt how to subtract mentally using the 'Jump the Difference' Strategy. This strategy can be done by jumping backwards or forwards.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been trialing a new maths program called Top Ten. So far, so good. We have been focusing on rounding decimal numbers by playing a game called Snakes and Ladder- but not the version we usually play at home! It has been pretty fun.

Literacy

We started a new book this week. It has had the students' attention right from the start. It's called The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. It starts with the Iron Man walking into to ocean and when he returns, the locals are scared. We have so many wondering about why the Iron Man walked into the ocean and why the locals are scared of him.
