House Athletics

Well done to all students who competed in the House Athletics last Friday! We were treated to beautiful weather and a great display of sportsmanship, effort, and team spirit from all year levels. A special congratulations to Avoca, who took out the F–12 House Shield — a fantastic achievement! Thank you also to the St Joseph’s students for participating and contributing to the day’s success.

Calder Athletics

The annual Calder Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 14th August at Charlton Park. Students will arrive at school as usual and then travel to by bus or on foot. As there will be no canteen service on the day, we ask that students bring a packed lunch and drink bottle. Students are required to wear school uniform and dress warmly, as there will be some downtime and weather conditions may vary. Events will conclude before 3:15pm, with students returning to school for normal dismissal and bus travel. If you plan to collect your child directly from Charlton Park, please inform the College in advance. We encourage families and friends to attend and support the students throughout the day.

What's been happening in Foundation:

The Foundation class participated with great enthusiasm in their first Athletics event, and they should all be very proud of their achievements! A highlight of the day was the 3-legged race with our Yr 12 buddies. In Literacy, we’ve been remembering the difference between consonants and vowels, and learning some new vowel digraphs (2 letters that make one sound); /ai/, /ee/, /ie/, /oa/ and /ue/. We’ve also been spelling words with ‘plural s’. We’ve noticed that sometimes plural s can make a hissy /s/ sound, like in ‘cats’, and sometimes it makes a buzzy /z/ sound, like in ‘dogs’. In Numeracy, we’ve been learning about subtraction. Students have loved telling ‘number stories’ to each other – these are great to try at home, too! “9 princesses lived in a castle, but 4 moved to another kingdom… how many princesses remaining?” or “6 apples were growing on a tree, but 3 got pecked by birds…” Kids can learn lots from inventing their own number stories, not just solving them. Outside the classroom, Foundation (along with many other F-6 students) have been mesmerised by the changes and additions to the ‘Magical Tree’. We’d like to thank the FLO group for their work on this project. It’s a wonderful addition to our play space.

Humanities:

Our F/1/2 students will be taking a trip around Australia this term in Humanities. Here they are designing their house on wheels to sleep their whole family. They needed to include enough beds, somewhere to prepare meals and think about all the different climates we have in Australia. There have some elaborate designs with some BIG budgets!

F-2 Music and Movement:

On Tuesday, our focus in Music and Movement was HipHop! Students are learning how to practice different dances and structure stage movements. They will be beginning musical theatre next week!

Book Review by Thomas

Tom recommended the book Box Full of Murders by Janice Hallet. The book is a murder mystery and play set in Chalfont Camp 40 years ago. The main characters are Ava, Luke, Baloo, Ricky, Sofia, Zara, Jacky, Skip, Josie, Alex, Jenny, Marecek and Mr Jolly. Ava and Luke find a box in their attic full of diary entries, reports and newspaper cuttings. Slowly an unsolved murder from 40 years ago begins to unfold and they realise that the murderer could be closer than they think. He would recommend the book to Grade 3 students and above who would like to try out something different and rates it 5/5 stars.
