Year Four

Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families,

It has been great to see the students actively engaging in their learning. They have settled back well into the school term and our whole school routines.

Our students were lucky to have a visit today from the RSPCA during an incursion where they learned about:

  • Who the RSPCA is and how they help animals and pet owners in the community
  • The laws that exist and relate to animal care and cruelty
  • What animals need
  • How animals are similar to us
  • The cat overpopulation game

The students were so enthusiastic and curious about the work of the RSPCA, asking lots of questions and respectfully listening during the session.

Please keep reading all the information for the many upcoming events.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education Focus

We will continue to explore the theme of "Fuel for the Journey'. Next Friday is Mary MacKillop Feast Day and we will be celebrating a special mass on this day. As such, students will be preparing for the mass by learning about Mary and the amazing work that she did for people and in particular children.

Beginning next Thursday and for each Thursday in August, students will be learning about the Rosary and how to pray the Rosary from one of our wonderful parishioners, Mary.

English Focus

Students will continue reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. They will further explore the vocabulary within the text and make meaningful links and connections to other texts and real life. The students began watching the movie this week and were able to make links between the text and the movie. They will continue to delve into the similarities and differences and make comparisons between the two.

Mathematics Focus

Students learned about location this week and how to read maps, use grid references and provide directions around a map. Next week students will begin the second component of multiplication and division with a focus on multiplying numbers using the distributive property strategy, and both expanded and contracted vertical algorithm methods.

Integrated Studies

Students will continue looking at 'What all living things need', how they can look after themselves, and how they can care about living things ethically and sustainably to ensure that we have a sustainable future.

Social/ Emotional Learning & RRRR

Students will be delving more into our unit 'Gender norms and stereotypes' where they will challenge gender pressures and learn about rights and responsibilities, exploring the difference between the two and how they can uphold both.

Auslan Focus

Students completed unit 5B this week where they learned signs beginning with 'open the...'. Next week, students will begin unit 5C focusing on today, tomorrow, yesterday, in two days and two days ago.

Important Reminders

Every morning the students complete a 'Check in'. This is generally done between 8:45 and 8:55am.

Thanks for providing your child with fruit or vegetables for their fruit break. We all get a little hungry mid morning, so it helps with our learning.

Please ensure that your child has a bottle of water each day. They are able to refill it when needed.

As the weather is getting colder, bringing a jacket to school to help us keep warm when we are outside is recommended. Please put names on all clothing items so they can be returned if they become lost.

Please continue to listen to your child read as this helps to build their fluency and accuracy skills.
