Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

We have had a great week of learning in Year 2. It has been wonderful to see students settling back into the school term and our whole school routines. Student excitement is building as we prepare for two weeks of swimming lessons.

This week we have been learning about...

Religious Education:  students have enjoyed learning about the Aboriginal perspective of Creation. We have examined Dreamtime stories and talked about the similarities and differences between Aboriginal Creation stories and God's Creation story.

Mathematics:  students continued learning about multiplicative thinking. We focused on skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, repeated addition, creating arrays, and understanding bar models.  Students went on a nature hunt and collected leaves, rocks, flowers and bark and used these items to create arrays.

English: students have been unpacking different language features using the picture book 'Bundjil'. We have been learning how to start sentences with subordinating conjunctions - although, even though. For our decoding and spelling focus, we have continued learning about Open Syllables.

Integrated Studies:  Students participated in an incursion with Rabbi Gabi to learn about Bar/Bat Mitzvah to focus on celebrations that people may engage in.  Students spoke to Rabbi Gabi over Zoom and asked great questions to gain valuable insights into these celebrations.

AUSLAN:  Students learnt that we sign ‘open’ or ‘put on’ by showing the action of how it is done.  We also learnt that signs that show you how you use, touch or hold an object are called handling signs.

The signs we learnt this week included:

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will learn about the first Sacrament of Initiation - Baptism.

Mathematics: Students will continue learning about multiplication and division.  Our focus will be on sharing and grouping with arrays.

English: Students will unpack different language features using the picture book 'Jabari Jumps'. We will learn how to begin sentences with a subordinating conjunction - if, when, before, after, although, even though. For our decoding and spelling focus, we will continue to learn about Open Syllables.

Auslan:  Students will learn that in Auslan we sign the time at the start of a sentence.

Integrated Studies:  Students will learn about celebrations of stages of development in different communities including the Djirri Djirri Coming of Age Ceremony.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR: Students will continue learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes.  Students will learn to describe how the rules of a game help people to play in a fair way.  Students will also learn how being unfair can lead to people getting hurt or upset.
