Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

Our students have settled in so well to Term 3 and it's going to be a busy one with lots of events including Book Week and  Father's Day celebrations. We have lots of students who play soccer and are choosing to jump in muddy puddles! It is a natural consequence for children who do this to spend the remainder of their school day in wet or muddy clothing.

We are planning an excursion to Myuna Farm on the 31st of October. While this is a long way away, we would love to have a few parent volunteers to join us for the day. Along with our Child Safety Policy, all parent volunteers are required to hold a Working with Children Check (free to apply online for volunteers) and to have completed the induction with our office (takes approximately 30 minutes). If interested please contact your child's classroom teacher to express your interest. Thank you!

Religious Education Focus:

This week in Religion, we revisited the Creation story from the book of Genesis. The children explored the idea that, like a 50 cent coin, the story has two sides: God created the world, and God created us in His image. They wrote special prayers of thanks and reflected on what makes them unique. We finished with a joyful celebration of themselves and all that makes them wonderfully made.

English focus:

We are reading "All Through the Year" by Jane Godwin which show the changes that occur in a family over the year. The changes described through the seasons shows different celebrations and events. You can discuss the story at home with your children and compare the changes you family go through over the year and the events you celebrate.

Phonics: During phonics this week we learnt how to spell words with the 'oo' as in goose and 'le' as in , sounds. You can conduct a mini dictation activity or ask your children to use these words in sentences.

Mathematics focus: This week we are learning about arrays. Arrays are equal groups arranged in rows and columns. This concept makes way for Multiplication and Division concept development.

Task to do at home:

SEL: This week we are learning to compare ways in which our preferences may be similar to or different from others. We are also learning about gender norms and stereotypes as well as positive gender relations.

Integrated Curriculum: Personal, Social and Community Health

Thank you so much to all the parents who have sent through the questionnaire and the first baby photo. They all look adorable and we look forward to full participation to make the project work. This week we learnt about how we have grown and changed over the past 7-8 years since birth and have reflected on some of the things we can now do independently. We used the short film 'Bao' as a tuning in video, which the students loved to engage with. At home you can watch the video together and chat about their reflections about growing up.

AUSLAN:

This week we learnt the signs:

Next  week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will work in groups to complete group projects based on the story of creation.

Integrated Curriculum focus: Next week we will learn about food choices and how they help us grow. Moving away from the 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' labelling of food, we will focus on foods that help us 'Go', 'Grow' and 'Glow'. We will also discuss how food advertising helps/hinders our food choices and how we can still eat 'Sometimes Foods' with an understanding about their nutritional value.

English focus: Next week we are reading a Non-Fiction book, Eat a Balanced Diet. This book is about healthy food choices.

Mathematics focus: Next week we are learning about skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10

SEL: Next week we are to learning to identify how labels stereotypes are unhelpful.

AUSLAN Focus: Students will learn the following signs during AUSLAN.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.

  • If your child has more than 1 take home text at home, please return the extra books to us. We need to make sure that every child has access to books at their reading level.

    Reminders

  • Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play for Term 3.

  • In preparation for our learning, can we please ask families to provide a baby photo for each student (if you haven't already done so). You can e-mail or send a printed copy to their own classroom teacher.

  • Can we please ask for a change of clothes to be placed in each child's bag (including socks, underwear or tights) in case of an accident.

  • Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home text:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
