Staying Active Beyond the School Day

It has been fantastic to see all of our Foundation to Year 6 students start the term with such enthusiasm and energy in their Physical Education lessons. Students have quickly settled into our routines and are already demonstrating growth in their movement skills, teamwork, and confidence. Their positive start sets the tone for an exciting term of active learning and skill development!

This term students from F-6 will continue to work on the following topics in PE:

  1. Moving the body – practicing fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, balancing, kicking, throwing and catching across different settings.
  2. Understanding movement – developing knowledge of how movement works and how to make healthy, safe decisions.
  3. Learning through movement – applying skills in games, sport, dance and lifetime physical activity contexts to build competence and confidence.

PE sessions give students the chance to develop these skills, being active outside school hours is just as important. Physical activity at home or in the community helps:

  • Reinforce movement skills and build confidence.
  • Develop social skills and resilience through team play.
  • Support healthy growth and mental wellbeing.

Australian Physical Activity Guidelines for Children (5–12 years)

  • At least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
  • Limit recreational screen time to less than 2 hours per day.
  • Include a variety of activities that build skills, strength, and fitness.

Many children fall short of these targets, which is why active families make a huge difference. Kids who play, ride, swim, or join local sport teams are much more likely to develop lifelong healthy habits.
