Year Six

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

It’s been a wonderful start to Term 3, filled with rich learning experiences and exciting opportunities for our Year 6 students.

Next week, we look forward to Fun Shoes and Socks Day, in support of National Aboriginal Children's Day, on Monday and school photo day on Wednesday.

This week we learnt about...

Religious Education Focus:

Students learnt about the Eucharist and its similarity to meaningful family meals. They also began to unpack a piece of scripture from the Book of Zechariah that will be shared in the upcoming Assumption Mass.

English Focus:

Reading:

We began reading our class novel Once by Morris Gleitzman. Students analysed the personality of its main character Felix, a good-natured Jewish boy oblivious to the atrocities of the Holocaust and World War II taking place around him in 1942 Poland.

Writing:

In Writing, we focused on relative clauses and how they can be used to add detail and richness to our sentences. Students began writing their information report on Poland.

Mathematics Focus:

In Maths, students focused on adding and subtracting mixed numerals. They used cubes to represent the process, and communicated their thinking through visuals, language and symbols. Next week, we will begin the Decimals unit, beginning with multiplying and dividing decimals and whole numbers by powers of 10.

Integrated Studies Focus:

In Health, students learnt about healthy self-image and the importance of appreciating their good qualities.

Auslan Learning Focus

In Auslan, learnt signs based on thought, such as "do you know" and "I remember".

SEL Learning Focus:

This week, students learnt about gender norms and stereotypes, and examples of inclusive language.

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
