‘Spending time online has many benefits. It’s a great way to stay in touch and have fun with friends and family, as well as learn new things and keep informed.’
However, being online can also have its negative experiences such as online abuse & witnessing distressing content. Here are some tips in using social media and technology effectively, while also looking after your mental health and wellbeing.
Look after yourself & keep supportive people around you:
Check in with yourself while you’re online – make sure you reach out for support when you need it. Don’t navigate difficult situations online by yourself.
Maintain Balance…
While it can be enjoyable to have time on social media/online, it’s also important to balance this out with connecting and communicating offline and in-person.
Avoid doomscrolling & think critically about what you are seeing online.
Make sure to think about why you’re online – and more importantly, how it’s making you feel. This can help YOU decide whether you should have time away from the screen or change the content that you’re looking at.
Stay safe while gaming
It's not all negative… Online gaming can be a healthy way to connect and improve your problem-solving skills (if it’s a positive environment). Avoid online communities that use hate or negative self-talk. Check your in-game functions to mute or block content and accounts you don’t want to interact with.
