Book an Adventure: Celebrating Book Week 2025
By Anita Little (Discovery Centre Manager)
The Book Week parade this year was a fantastic day for everyone, celebrating the "Book an Adventure" theme. The energy was incredible, starting with our amazing Year 12 students who formed a guard of honour (including some inflatable dinosaurs) to welcome everyone, before joining in for their final parade. It was a true pleasure to see the primary students dressed up in such creative and impressive costumes, bringing a wide range of fiction and non-fiction book characters to life. Students then took some time during the day to read in adventurous ways and places. Thank you so much to all the students, teachers and parents for your enthusiasm and incredible effort. It was a wonderful day celebrating stories and imagination, and we're so grateful for the creativity God has given us through books and stories.
Throughout Book Week, our students did a fabulous job of co-creating adventure scenes in the Discovery Centre. They built a magnificent space station complete with space creatures, and a fun beach scene featuring a cardboard boat (and a few jellyfish to watch out for!). In the forest, they hung beautiful flowers on vines and even made a unique hand tree. A huge thank you goes to our dedicated library leaders for their enthusiasm and hard work, and to all the staff for their wonderful support. The success of the week was a testament to the students' creativity and the strong sense of community that brought it all together.
LEARNING FROM OUR LOCAL HEROES & BUSINESSES
By Zayda Kennard (Prep Teacher)
Last week, our Prep students enjoyed a wonderful excursion exploring the community of Belgrave South, visiting the local shops, the CFA, and meeting some of the amazing people who help our community every day.
Our first stop was the local vet, where students were introduced to the vet’s friendly cat and a playful cavoodle. We then explored the hardware store, pharmacy, butcher, green grocer, and bakery. At each stop, the children learned about the important roles these businesses play in our community. A special highlight was receiving a fresh apple from the green grocer — a lovely reminder of how fortunate we are to have such generous and caring people nearby.
The visit concluded at the Belgrave South CFA, where the firefighters taught the students about fire safety and demonstrated the features of their big red fire truck. The children were fascinated to see all the equipment and learn how it helps keep everyone safe. Once again, the students experienced firsthand how lucky we are to have such dedicated community members looking out for us.
It was a wonderful day of learning, discovery, and community connection.
IMPRESSIONS OF FRANCE: ART AND LANGUAGE IN MELBOURNE
By Chloe Krivan (Art Teacher)
Last Thursday, the Year 9 French and Art students enjoyed a delightfully sunny day in Melbourne visiting the French Impressionist exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The excursion provided a window into 19th-Century France, capturing the fashion, landscapes, and leisure activities of the time. Students engaged thoughtfully in an educational talk outlining the trajectory of Impressionism in the nineteenth-century, before touring the carefully curated spaces where we viewed more than 100 paintings created by artists including Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cassatt.
The art students were given a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the brushwork, colour palettes, and expressive techniques that we have been studying in the classroom. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a walk through the city, crêpes for lunch (ordered in French!), and a short visit to St Paul’s cathedral. Students returned to school inspired and enriched, with a deeper understanding of both French culture and the Impressionist movement. Thank you to all who made this day possible!
