Year Three

 Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Ephesus Families,

Year 3 students had a wonderful start to the week celebrating Book Week. They loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and sharing stories with friends. The theme this year was “Book an Adventure”, and the students enjoyed going on many adventures through the books they read.

As a class, we explored The Land Recalls You by David Cragg and Noni Cragg. This story encouraged us to think about caring for the land and listening to the stories it tells. It also reminded us of the deep and important connection Aboriginal people have with the land.

A big thank you to all the families who joined us for the parade—we loved sharing this special celebration with you.

Congratulations to the following learners !

Religious Education

Our integrated studies  and Religious Education are closely related. This week, we are learning how prayer and the Eucharist give us “fuel” for our lives. Just like food gives our bodies energy, prayer and the Eucharist give us spiritual strength. They help us to grow in love, show kindness, and stay close to God in our daily lives.

Maths

This week students learnt to identify and compare angles as measures of turn, and to use right angles as a reference in drawings and everyday situations. By the end of the week they were able to describe each angle using correct mathematical language?

How did they know whether their angles were right, smaller, or greater?

In the number lens this week, students learned to round numbers to the nearest 100 for example - if the number is 534 we would say “534 is closer to 500”.

English

This week, students have been building their reading and spelling skills by working with a range of challenging words and patterns. They are learning to notice how words are structured, practise spelling them more confidently, and use them correctly in their writing.

In writing, we are finishing our Information Report: All About Iron. Students are drafting paragraphs on iron’s properties, where it is found, how it is mined, and how it is used. We are also coming to the end of our class novel, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, which has helped us connect our reading and writing in meaningful ways.  In Week 6, students will be writing their own Information Reports on a topic of their choice. They will research, plan, and organise their ideas using subheadings. We are looking forward to reading their reports!

AUSLAN

This week in Auslan, students have been using their imagination to create their own signed stories. They enjoyed playing signed games with simple statements such as “I forgot”, “I have”, and “don’t have”, helping them build confidence in using everyday signs.

Social and Emotional Learning / RRRR

This week, students learned about the difference between rights—the things we are all entitled to—and responsibilities—the things we are expected to do to help ourselves and others. We discussed how everyone has the right to feel safe, be treated fairly, and have their needs met, both at home and at school. Students shared examples of how they can respect the rights of others in different places, including their homes, our classroom, the school grounds, and in the wider community. They also explored how acting responsibly helps build a respectful, kind, and fair environment for everyone

Integrated Learning

This week, we learned how to recognise and describe different emotions in ourselves and others. We explored basic emotions like happy, sad, and angry, and discussed what might cause us to feel them. Students thought about how emotions can feel in our bodies—such as butterflies in the tummy when nervous or a hot face when angry. We also practised strategies to manage our emotions in a respectful and safe way, like taking deep breaths, talking to a trusted person, or walking away to calm down.
