Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

The Year 2 students have had a wonderful week filled with both fun and learning. They loved dressing up and proudly participating in the Book Week parade, which brought lots of excitement and joy to our classrooms. Alongside this, students have continued developing their confidence with the routine for the Number Fluency Program, practising their skills each day. We are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm the Year 2 students bring to their learning.

A reminder to families that as part of our Integrated Studies learning on healthy eating, we will be creating a special recipe book within the Year 2 community and we would love your contribution! We warmly welcome recipes from all cuisines, including those that reflect your country or cultural traditions. This is a wonderful opportunity to share a favourite family dish and celebrate the diversity in our Year 2 community. Recipes can be printed and sent to school with your child or emailed directly to your child’s teacher. We look forward to seeing the delicious and unique recipes our families have to share!

This week we have been learning about...

Religious Education:   Students have been exploring the concept of the Trinity and its significance.  We have been learning that there is one God that exists with three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. We have also been exploring how God shows us love.

Mathematics:  Students have commenced learning on the concept of Operations.  Our focus this week has been on the operations of addition and subtraction. We have had a particular emphasis on developing flexible strategies, including the use of bar models to visualise problems and the CUBES strategy to carefully unpack and plan solutions.

English:  Students have enjoyed reading and unpacking different language features in the picture book 'The Truck Cat'. Students participated in a Book Week activity where they created their own cat.  Based on the cat they created, students focused on writing sentences to describe the physical characteristics and personality of their cat.  Students have also been focused on expanding their sentences by incorporating adjectives to modify the noun/s.

AUSLAN:  Students reflected on and consolidated their learning of Auslan signs from this term. Students participated in learning activities that allowed them to practise using the signs learnt over the past four weeks.

Integrated Studies:  Students have commenced learning about healthy eating. Our focus has been on the importance of healthy eating and about how eating a ‘rainbow’ of fruits and vegetables can help us stay healthy.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR:  Students continued their learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes. Students discussed what it means to be gender fair and participated in role-play activities to demonstrate how they could respond in situations that were not gender fair.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will continue to explore the concept of the Trinity and its importance on creation and caring for Earth and its people.

Mathematics: Teaching will continue to focus on the concept of Operations. Students will learn to apply the operations of multiplication and division. We will be placing particular emphasis on using bar models to visualise and solve number problems.

English: Students will unpack different language features using the book What's on my Plate. Students will learn to identify verbs and adverbs of manner in sentences, and to select adverbs of manner to describe verbs in sentences.

Auslan:  Students will learn that signs that show an action by holding, touching or using an object are called handling signs. We use handling signs when we hold or touch an object to close or play it.

The signs we will learn include:

Integrated Studies:  Students will continue learning on the topic of healthy eating and community messages.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR:  Students will commence learning about positive gender relations. We will explore and identify different ways people can hurt others—such as by hurting feelings, harming bodies, or damaging possessions on purpose.  Through these conversations, students will build their understanding of respectful behaviours and the importance of caring for others.
