Year Five

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

A big thank you to all our students and families for making Monday’s Book Week Parade such a wonderful celebration. The creativity and effort that went into the costumes was fantastic, and it was a joy to see our love of reading come alive in such a fun and colourful way!

As part of this year’s Book Week theme, “Book an Adventure,” students read "We Live in a Bus" by Dev Petzold and connected it to our Inquiry unit, Fuel for the Journey. They also explored the stories of great adventurers such as Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, and Jessica Watson, the youngest person to sail solo around the world. These learning experiences inspired students to reflect on the different journeys people take, and what fuels their determination and courage along the way.

Next week we will be learning about...

Religious Education Focus:

Students will continue learning to recognise how the Holy Spirit is present and active in our lives, guiding us on our journey of faith. They will connect this learning to our Inquiry statement, “Fuel for the Journey,” reflecting on how the Holy Spirit supports and inspires us along our personal journey.

English Focus

Students will continue reading 'Tom Appleby Convict Boy' by Jackie French. The students are enjoying the story of a boy named Tom which is set in 18th century England, and in the convict era in Australia. In English the students will continue to analyse the vocabulary in the text as well as adding to their writing of an Information Report. The focus next week will be on creating their fourth body paragraph using Single Paragraph Outline (SPO).

Mathematics Focus

This week, students will review how to identify the most suitable unit of measurement for mass in different contexts and explore equivalent measurements in different units. They will also be learning to compare and select appropriate units of measurement for capacity.

Auslan Focus

Next week we will learn the signs from Unit 7.  Students are learning that in Auslan we first label the object and then use SASS (Size and Shape Specifiers) to describe it. In Unit 7B, students will practise signing different pets and then use SASS to describe it.

Social/ Emotional Learning Focus:

Next week students will investigate "Gender Policing", which is an act when people enforce gender stereotyping by enforcing their attitudes and prejudices.

Integrated Studies:

This week, students will be learning about how puberty prepares our bodies for adulthood and reproduction. They will identify some of the physical changes that happen during this time and explain the role of key reproductive organs using correct and respectful language.
