National Science Week

This week is Science Week! We have had lots of fun lunch time activities to celebrate.

On Monday, it was nice an sunny so we got outside and looked at our shadows. Students paired up and outlined each others shadows. In 5 minute intervals, they then traced around the shadows again and we saw the shadows were moving. Students noticed that the shadows moved in the same direction each time. Some kids even looked at the shadows the buildings were making. This lead to lots of great discussion about the sun appearing to move across the sky throughout the day and the rotation of the Earth.

On Tuesday, we had some sneaky invaders in the school who left footprints around the yard. Students were challenged to track the footprints down to find the culprits. At the end of the tacks, our lovely STEAM leaders gave each student a token with animal that the print belonged to. After running around the whole school, students then chilled out in the STEAM room with colouring sheets of those animals.

Today, we had our escape room challenge. Students took on the role of a lost space explorer. They had to solve a number of challenges and puzzles to find where in the universe they were. In the process, the learned about constellations, DNA, elements on the periodic table and the waggle dance of the bee.

Congratulations to Zoe, Ramona, Isabel and Holly for tracking down all of the animal foot prints first and River, Sienna, Maggie, Emma, Mae and Djuna, Taylor, Tully, Etta, Wren and Eadie who all discovered that the lost space explorer was on Earth all along first.

I'd like to say a massive thank you to our STEAM leaders Sebastian and Eva and their friends Charlie, Clancy, Elsa, Luca, Neelix and Oliver who helped plan and support all of the activities, made all the announcements and created newsletter articles and posters for STEAM week. I'm sure you'll agree with me they did an amazing job.
