News from Physical Education

Physical activity benefits for social and emotional health.

As well as supporting your child's physical health, exercise is also good for your child's brain development and wellbeing. Safe exercise is a chance for your child to have fun with friends and family.

Physical activity can:

  • help your child build social skills and prevent antisocial behaviour
  • improve your child's concentration
  • help them build teamwork and cooperation skills
  • reduce stress, anxiety and depression

It is recommended that children aged between 5 and 14 complete minimum of 60 minutes per day of physical activity.

How can you help your child reach this target?

Jump Rope for Heart

The Jump Rope for Heart program was launched at PPS a few weeks ago and there has been a lot of excitement around this topic. Not only does JRFH promote physical activity, but it is also a way that we can teach our children to be charitable and learn about people that maybe less fortunate than us. Since the start of the program there has been a noticeable amount of skipping ropes around the school yard. We encourage student to bring their own rope for this. In regard to fundraising, we set a target for the school to raise $10,000 by the end of the year. Our current total raised is $7,424 with 151 students currently registered.

Thank you so much for your support and engaging your child in the program. Fortnightly certificates will be handed out to the top fundraisers and most active skippers.

If you have not registered yet, please do so. It is free and your child’s portal will give you many resources to help your child learn and find a love for skipping. Some students have learned how to skip within a day of practise. No dollar amount is worth the smile on their face when they have made this achievement! Friday mornings at the senior school campus will be our skipping day from 8:45am under the COLA so bring a skipping rope to school and get skipping! Junior campus skipping day will be announced soon.

Senior Interschool Sport

Now that our district weekly fixtures are over, we are heading into the divisional and regional finals. For our winter sports, both soccer teams, tee ball teams and our boys/mixed netball team have progressed through.

The soccer finals were held at Darebin Football Centre on the 30th July. Both teams were very competitive and were undefeated on the day. The boys team progressed through to regional competitions with the girls coming in second place. We wish the boys the best of luck at regionals.

The boys teeball team needed to play a divisional game against Keon Park district winners Thomastown PS. PPS were far too strong and progressed through to regional finals which the girls automatically qualified for. At regional held yesterday, the boys played extremely well making it through to the final and faced the dominant Marymede College. The boys lost in the final and were runners up on the day. The girls played extremely well and should be proud of their achievements making it to the regional stage.

The boys/mixed netball team played off at divisional finals held on the 29th July at Narrendjeri Stadium. They were very dominant on the day and progressed through to regional finals which will be held at Diamond Velley Sports Centre on the 19th August. With high spirits we really look forward to seeing the team compete at this level. Good luck to our netballers.

PPS Athletics Carnival

On the 31st July, PPS held their Athletics Carnival at Coburg Harriers Athletics Track. The purpose of the carnival was for full inclusion of all students and to have FUN being physically active. Students participated in house games including Rob the Nest, Tug-of-War, Flag Race and Baton Relays. All students walked away wearing multiple place ribbons. Of course, there was the competing students trying to qualify for the PPS athletics team for the upcoming PDPSSA District Athletics Carnival. These students earned their spot by winning their individual events. They also earned individual points towards becoming champion boy or girl for their age group.

Congratulations to Kora S, Fred ML, Mitchell E, Ava Y, Cooper O and Alice O for their champion achievements.

Thanks again to all the parents for coming along and volunteering where needed. Without your efforts these events won’t run as smoothly as they do.

The PDPSSA Athletics Carnival will be held on the 14th August and we wish those students attending the best of luck!
