AI in Learning and Assessment
Artificial intelligence represents one of the most powerful and, at the same time, one of the most challenging learning tools ever created. While generative AI brings incredible potential to enhance teaching, learning, and innovation, it also presents significant educational challenges. When students outsource their curiosity or rely on large language models (AI) to create their work, they risk short-circuiting the genuine thinking, critical inquiry, and creativity that education is designed to build. Technology should empower learners rather than create dependency. Furthermore, issues surrounding academic integrity, data privacy, and AI "hallucinations" or false data require clear ethical boundaries and thoughtful guidance.
At Kellyville High School, we believe that education must develop thinkers, creators, and lifelong learners. AI can support that journey, but it can never replace a student’s own voice, curiosity, or judgment. Guided by the core value of integrity, our school aligns with the Department of Education’s "human-plus-AI" approach. This framework balances technological potential with human expertise, values, and ethical standards. To protect student data and safety, the Department recommends NSWEduChat, a secure generative AI tool built specifically for the NSW public education community.
To ensure complete transparency and maintain academic integrity, Kellyville High School is establishing a clear Three-Level AI Framework for assignments, classwork, and assessment tasks. This approach mirrors what many universities are already doing, and it clearly identifies how and when students are permitted to use AI for learning.
Level 1: No AI Allowed (Strict Prohibition) Generative AI tools are completely blocked for these tasks. Every component must be the student’s original work without AI brainstorming, drafting, structuring, coding, or translating. Level 1 tasks ensure students develop foundational skills, baseline knowledge, and unassisted critical thinking. Only standard word processors and basic spell-checkers are permitted.
Level 2: Conditional AI Use (Permitted with Transparency) AI acts as a thought partner, collaborator, or learning tutor. Students may use AI to brainstorm ideas, clarify complex concepts, outline structures, or debug code. However, transparency is mandatory: submissions must feature an acknowledgment declaration, an appendix with the complete prompt-and-response trail, and retained early drafts to demonstrate the thinking process.
Level 3: Full AI Use (Fully Integrated) Students are encouraged to leverage AI broadly for content generation, data analysis, or advanced coding. In Level 3 tasks, the focus shifts to high-level curation, creative direction, and critical evaluation. Students must rigorously verify all outputs for accuracy and properly cite all AI-generated text and media.
Our philosophy remains simple: Think First, AI Second. AI should serve to deepen your thinking by asking questions like "What am I missing?" or "How can I make this clearer?" If an assignment is generated primarily by AI without representing the student's authentic thinking, it fails to meet the learning goal.
By fostering transparency, agency, and responsibility, Kellyville High School will strive to use emerging technologies appropriately to strengthen our learners for the challenges of tomorrow.

At Kellyville High School, we take immense pride in celebrating the dedication, talent, and passion of all students. I would like to invite parents, family members, students, teachers, and broader community members to submit nominations for the Distinguished Achiever Award – an award that recognises students in Years 7 to 12 who demonstrate exceptional service, significant community contribution, or remarkable achievements across a diverse range of areas, including:
- Community Service and Volunteer Work
- Performing or Visual Arts
- Sport and Athletics
- Leadership and Advocacy
- Innovation and Other Community Endeavours
The school executive will review all nominations and successful Year 12 nominees will be honoured and receive their awards during the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony in September. Successful recipients in all other year groups will be formally recognised at our End-of-Year Presentation Ceremony.
To nominate a deserving student, please complete the official nomination form detailing their specific actions, accomplishments, and community impact. The nomination form will be emailed to all parents and made available to students and staff by the end of August.
