What's Happening in Prep?

Our preps have been very busy this term, being productive learners and taking part in lots of fun activities!
Mathematics
The students have been learning to manipulate and sequence numbers from 1-20. They’ve been counting backwards and forwards, making and counting collections, and representing the numbers in different ways using materials like blocks, counters, tens frames, unifix blocks, and plastic teddies. They’ve learnt to identify the numbers before and after any given number and are exploring ways to count collections without counting by 1s. Students have been learning about height and length and how to correctly compare two objects, and how to use mathematical language to describe the position of people and objects. They’ve been creating, describing, and grouping 2D shapes based on their features, and they have also been learning to collect and interpret simple data displays that have two outcomes.
English
The students have continued to learn the letters of the alphabet and their most common sounds through our daily use of the Sounds-Write program and using that knowledge to read and write simple vowel-consonant-vowel (CVC) words by blending and segmenting the sounds. They do this through a range of activities such as word building, sound swaps, spelling quizzes, and dictation. They’re learning to apply these skills to read and construct simple sentences in their daily reading and writing tasks.
The students have begun writing descriptive sentences about themselves, their peers, animals, and familiar characters. They’ve been exploring describing perspectives like colour, size, texture, number, shape, and doing words, and have begun to use the language ‘nouns’, ‘adjectives’ and ‘verbs’. Alongside their writing, they have been practicing using the same language to verbally describe themselves and their peers.
Inquiry
This term, the students have explored how to be a scientist, using skills like observing, identifying, and recording to discover what it means to be living and non-living. The unit began with an excursion to Melbourne Zoo where the students were tasked with using their five senses to make observations about the animals they saw and identify their different features. Back at school they continued to discuss the different features of plants and animals, and how they can be used to group them in different ways. They’ve used magnifying glasses to observe our local plant life and recorded their observations using booklets and scientific diagrams.
Athletics Day
The students took part in their first ever Athletics Day! They proudly wore their team colours and played games like an egg and spoon race, hurdles, beanbag throws, and sack races! They showed excellent teamwork by working together to win points for their house, and in the way they supported and cheered for their peers in other houses.
