Year 5/6 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

Term 2 is off to an exceptional start in 5/6 with some great learning! Students have come back motivated and ready to learn!

Last Friday Aunty Shara organised an exciting guest speaker in MALPA. Aunty Sairose Lovett came in to talk to students about her mob and Gunditjmara Country. We learnt about life at Lake Condah and the revolutionary eel traps her mob make. Aunty Sairose taught students how to weave traditional armbands, often worn during ceremonial dance and cultural activities. She showed us photos, brought in an incredible piece of weaving made with raffia and emu feathers and told us a Dreaming story from her Country.

In Maths, students have been diving into new multiplication strategies, developing their number fluency and exploring worded problems. Supporting students to continue learning their times tables at home will help them to get stuck into this term’s numeracy learning at school!

In Unit Focus, students are beginning to explore Earth and Space sciences. We have started to learn about the planets in our solar system and develop our own information reports and interesting facts about the planets. Students have been documenting questions they have about space and will be following some of these lines of inquiry later in the term. This Friday we are headed to Scienceworks and the planetarium to discover more learnings and develop more questions. Keep your eyes peeled for the next issue of Dhumbajerri for updates on how our exciting excursion goes!
