Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Levi Hudson

It has been a very busy few weeks with some exciting events taking place.

We all enjoyed our excursion to Ecolinc in Pakenham where we spent the day investigating Animal Adaptations. Students studied a variety of plants and animals, including a frog, lizard, stick insect and pitcher plant. They learnt about structural and behavioural adaptations in both pants and animals and took part in some fun activities to highlight these. Most importantly we all got to study these things up-close!

We all also really enjoyed the amazing play ground at Deep Creek Reserve!

In the lead-up to ANZAC Day, students completed a variety of activites relating to the meaning of ANZAC day and how and why we commemorate it. These included reading about Indigenous members of the forces, studying a collection of picture story books relating to war, listening to stories of family members from soldiers of WW1, creating art work and making a poppy to wear or place at the cenotaph.

It was lovely to see the number of students and families at the Bunyip service, and especially those students wearing their own hand-made poppies. Thanks to our school captains for their role in the service and in laying the wreath on behalf of our school community.

Maths work has been related to chance and probability and 3D shape. These are always fun topics to learn about and there have been plenty of 'hands-on' activities.

In writing we have been extending our knowledge of non-fiction writing especially information reports. We have introduced the learning pathway(rubric) which students use to guide their own learning and work towards specific goals. With the help of peer and self assessment, we have identifed areas to work on and over the coming weeks, students will work towards building their knowledge and achieving their goals.
