HSIE

We have hit the ground running in HSIE in 2024 with fun, engaging and interactive learning activities, both inside and outside the classroom. Here are just a few of the amazing learning experiences that we have seen in HSIE so far this term.

HSC Legal Studies

Year 12 Legal Studies visited Wagga Police Station as part of their study of the criminal investigation process. The visit commenced with an up close look at a Highway Patrol car and the latest technology it uses by Constable Kym Crawford and Inspector Gerard Horsley.

Students were very fortunate to have an impromptu chat with visiting NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Mr Paul Pisanos and the NSW Minister of Police, The Honourable Yasmin Catley.

This was followed by a Question and Answer session with Senior Detectives Tim Briggs and Bernie Nix and ex-Mater Dei student and newly appointed Detective, Sam Kirk.

Once again, an invaluable experience that enhances the student’s understanding of the vital role the police play in our criminal justice system.

Year 11 Geography

Year 11 students undertook fieldwork to observe the geomorphic processes occurring at various sites around the college. These include weathering and erosion from mechanical and biological factors. Students then collected soil samples from various sites to determine the soil type and pH levels.

Year 9 Commerce

As part of the core topic, Consumer and Financial Decisions, Year 9 Commerce students undertook a brand name versus generic taste test activity to explore the factors that influence consumer decisions; as well as decisions about spending or saving. There was considerable debate about which items tasted best or represented the best value for money.

Year 7 Geography

Year 7 have started their HSIE studies with the Geography unit Landscapes and Landforms. They have been investigating the features of a range of different landscapes, with a particular focus on rivers. As a way of consolidating understanding of the way that height is represented on a map, Year 7 students made mountains out of play dough and then created a contour map of their mountain.
