Lab Report

Jessica Deans

Thank you to all the parents of Year 2 students who have sent in baby pictures of their children to add to our stages of development page in their books.

We took two photos in class, an elderly photo (using an ageing app) and a normal photo of them as a child.  The baby photo has fit in perfectly.

If you have not yet had the chance to send a picture in, you can do so at any time via email to jessica.deans@education.vic.gov.au or in hard copy through your student.

This week the Year 3s completed their last entries in their Nature Journals for their Portfolios just as the Year 5 students started their Portfolio task - closed terrariums.

They are exploring how to create their own miniature ecosystem that is low maintenance once you understand how all the parts work together.

The layered system covers water management so that the plants do not get too wet or too dry, sanitation in the form of charcoal to keep the system sterile, growing mediums (for which the students had the options of orchid mix, coco fibres or potting mix) and water retention in the form of sphagnum moss or vermiculite for students who want to include moss as a ground cover in their terrarium.

Each student got to choose a plant and next week we will be writing up a report about the process, a fantastic start!

More movie recommendations from the Science Lab this week to complement our learning… Breaking Boundaries: The Science of our Planet is another movie narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
